After several years of being stagnant in Xbox's customization features, the Xbox Avatar Editor app will now be discontinued starting on January 9, 2025.

Microsoft announced it will officially remove the option to edit or create Xbox Avatars using the app. However, it confirmed that Xbox Original avatars can still be used alongside supported Xbox profile customization features.

Like many forgotten products and features such as Google's Stadia, the Xbox Avatar Editor app has been on the bottom shelf of Microsoft's most favorite things since its release in 2018.

Microsoft indicated that it will discontinue the app due to low engagement and its shift "towards delivering other player experiences", which brings Microsoft's futile attempt in VR to mind.

Microsoft has also started to discontinue its Windows Mixed Reality platform and has caused many VR headsets to stop functioning after losing access to SteamVR or the Windows Mixed Reality app.

If you have not updated your Windows 11 version to version 24H2, you'll still be able to use your Windows Mixed Reality VR headset until November 2026. Either way, you'll have no choice but to stash away your Windows VR headset within the next 2 years.

Many people think that while the removal of the Xbox Avatar Editor app seems to be out of place, it seems to be connected to the Windows Mixed Reality app where people can possibly use their Xbox avatars as their Microsoft VR avatar as well.

Now that Microsoft has halted official support from Windows Mixed Reality, it just makes sense that they will remove and reallocate resources that they are using to maintain the Xbox Avatar Editor app.

Xbox Avatar purchases made from November 1, 2023, to January 9, 2025, will be refunded to you, so nothing is entirely lost except your ability to create these fantastic Xbox Avatars.

Everything has a silver lining though, as the Microsoft and Xbox-exclusive game Avowed, developed by Fallout: New Vegas creator Obsidian Entertainment, is set to launch in early February next year.
