Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 was the expected sequel fans wanted after the last remake compilation, so it’s not surprising to see it arrive on current-gen consoles and Switch. Later on, a Switch 2 version was announced sometime after the new console’s reveal, with Switch players wanting an upgrade in some form.
It turns out that there is a free Switch 2 upgrade for Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4. Sadly, this is a digital-only bonus, so fans who bought the physical cartridge will be out of luck in this regard.
After an X post from Switch Corner got the attention of fans, many of them discussed how this works. Because the upgrade is free, fans were mostly happy, with many even deciding to get the Switch 1 version and play it on Switch 2.
However, these players have supposedly tested their physical copy, revealing that they don’t get that free upgrade. It turns out only digital versions of Pro Skater 3 + 4 will be getting the free Switch 2 upgrade, which is disappointing for physical buyers.
While simply having the option to get a free upgrade is great, many gamers are buying the physical version of Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 + 4 on Switch 1. It would have been great to have an option to upgrade to the Switch 2 version, even a paid one. The fact that they’re limiting the free option to digital buyers just doesn’t feel right.
PlayStation and Xbox have been giving free upgrades to their current-gen consoles for a while now, even with their physical versions. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Horizon Forbidden West got immediate upgrades since they were cross-gen with the PS4 and PS5. Xbox has also done this with games like Cyberpunk 2077.
Nintendo really doesn’t have an excuse to restrict upgrades like this. If this is a mandate from the company to other publishers, it’s not a great one. Either way, it will be interesting to see if this affects Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 sales on Switch or Switch 2.
It is worth noting that those who pre-ordered the game did get early access, so maybe the physical version will get a free upgrade later on. Some players have also said they don’t have any upgrade path at all, but others have stated the opposite. We’ll have to wait for the game’s official release on July 11 to see what happens.
