Ubisoft falls victim to yet another security breach

In a turbulent close to the year that has seen the likes of Insomniac games becoming victim to massive data leaks, Ubisoft has also come under fire by hackers. As reported by the devs themselves, it appears an unwelcome guest decided to infiltrate their systems in the last few days.

The studio behind the likes of Assassin's Creed and Far Cry first told BleepingComputer that investigations were underway after VX-Underground, a security research collective, shared screenshots of what looks to be the company's internal services. Little is known about the extent of the data retrieved, according to Ubisoft, who stated "We are aware of an alleged data security incident and are currently investigating. We don't have more to share at this time".

The threat actor responsible for the breach has allegedly infiltrated many of Ubisoft's valuable resources, claiming they got their hands on the Ubisoft SharePoint server, Microsoft Teams, Confluence, and MongoDB Atlas panel. This was made evident by the screenshots they shared of the information that had grabbed in the 48-hour cyber heist.

The breach is the third that Ubisoft has suffered since 2020, with the first of them causing a release of information regarding their Watchdogs title, and is the cherry on top of what has been a turbulent year for developers. Between thousands of employees being laid off across the industry and major developers having confidential information leaked online, many will be relieved to see 2023's final days come to an end. The latest attack comes just a week after Insomniac suffered a devastating blow, with their roadmap for the next decade and a plethora of information about their upcoming Wolverine game all surfacing.

With 2024 just around the corner, developers across the gaming community will be looking into making improvements to their cyber security as attackers continue to have a field day on the industry. Let's hope the new year lifts the curse that seems to be hovering over developers of late.
