If you spend as much time playing a game as GTA Online’s most hardcore players have, you’re bound to develop a strong bond with your character.
While The Witcher 3’s Geralt of Rivia and the Yakuza series’ Kazuma Kiryu might boast fanactical fan clubs because of what players know about them and their personalities, GTA Online’s protagonists are a bit more mysterious, never speaking and refusing to reveal anything about their pasts.
This hasn’t stopped players from trying to unravel the deep mysteries of their silent creations, with some on Reddit swapping headcanons regarding what their characters did before arriving in Los Santos.
Unravelling the Mysteries of GTA’s Quiet Crimelords
The thread concerning this in the GTA Online subreddit began with user Lower_Clothes8845 sharing an image of their character and asking the simple question: “what would you say your character did before coming to LS?”.
Some users responded that they believe their characters to have a military past, with Tall-Dutch-Guy suggesting that being an African warlord is the only explanation for the amount of weapons their protagonist can carry at once and FlamingoSquare5228 simply answering: “multiple war crimes”.
Others pinpointed the east coast as their character’s point of origin, with user fonzi305 saying their protagonist was a “getaway driver in Liberty City” and ETkach saying their silent buddy was a “member of Angels of Death in Liberty City. After they get wiped out as a club in 2008 (the character) goes into small crime, then flees into Los Santos because of a feud with a gang.”
A few users went the tried and tested bitter ex-cop route, with A_Guy_Named_Matthew saying: “My character was a Carcer City PD officer who shot 63 Canadian immigrants, then got fired and turned to crime.”
Some of the stories offered were worthy of being Hollywood movie premises, with user Lurked4EverB4Joining explaining: “He played golf. A lot of golf. It's when his dreams of making it pro in golf failed that he turned to a life of violence and crime.”
Meanwhile, user ThirstyPatriot confirmed their character to have a rather surreal background, saying: “He used to be Ronald McDonald before falling on hard times and entering the business of cocaine production.”
Regardless of which shape your GTA Online character’s tragic tale takes, make sure to follow us for more updates as new content, possibly starring Michael from single-player, is released.
