Targeting enemies was once as easy as pressing a button. It's more involved in Assassin's Creed Shadows but in a good way.
The game skips the flashing icon and makes you think like an assassin.
You have the tools, support, and just the right amount of info to solve things yourself.
It's a bit slower, but it makes every takedown feel earned. Here's how marking targets actually works in Assassin's Creed Shadows.
How To Mark Targets in Assassin's Creed Shadows
If you're trying to get into a stronghold or find someone, just use your Observe ability.
With this, you can scan the area and identify important points from far away. Objectives, targets, and loot are color-coded: blue for enemies and quest-related NPCs, gold for valuable loot, and white for collectibles or shrines.
This doesn't permanently tag them, but it gives you a solid sense of who's where, especially useful if you're surveying a large compound. You can also quickly mark targets by aiming at them.
When you hold the aim button (L2
, LB
, or right-click), the enemy gets "soft tagged" for a short time. This trick is handy when you're sneaking and need to watch someone while planning your next step.
You don't have to do everything on your own. The more you play, the more you'll unlock a team of Scouts who can help with everything. One of the things they do best is find target spots from the clues you've picked up.
Shadows don't always make it easy. Instead of a quest marker, you'll get a few key details about the target's location, like the province, area, or a nearby landmark. Now that you have these clues, open your map and send a Scout to explore the area.
If they spot the target, your map will get the right marker. If not, you'll have to revisit the clues and explore a new area.
Scouts have more to do than just find people. You can count on them to collect resource stockpiles that are too much for you to carry during missions, and they can even help clear your Wanted status so guards aren't chasing you all over the map.
Even so, they're relatively limited. You're limited to a few Scouts early on, and some actions need two, not just one. You can swap Scouts by changing the season to reset them or by paying at your hideout to grab more for the current season.
You can also increase your Scout capacity permanently by upgrading buildings like the Study or the Stables. The latter doesn't increase your headcount, but it does cut down the number of Scouts needed for specific tasks.
You've also got an animal companion who can act as an extra set of eyes. From above, your companion can scout the area and mark enemies for you as they fly over a base or heavily guarded spot.
Hover over someone long enough, and they'll be temporarily highlighted. These highlights don't last long, but they help you figure out how to move through a tough spot.
There you have it—that's a few ways to mark targets in Assassin's Creed Shadows.
