November 24, 2023 - We've updated our guide on how to find, fix, and use a Moon Lantern.

To combat the game's new challenges in Act 2, you're going to need the Moon Lantern in Baldur's Gate 3. The creepy Drider, a hulking arachnoid monstrosity, is one of the first big NPCs you meet when progressing past Act 1 and entering Act 2. He himself carries a Moon Lantern, and as such is tasked with your safe passage to Moonrise Towers.

However, finding a Moon Lantern to protect you from these horrors without the need for Kar'Niss might not be so simple. If you chose to explore the Underdark in Act 1, no doubt you'd have come across Grymforge. There, you can choose to save a drow True Soul called Nere, but if you end up killing and looting him, you'll find a broken Moon Lantern within his loot. It is in these scenarios that it's also necessary to know how to fix the light source.

While you're here, be sure to check out our Baldur's Gate 3 race tier list and class tier list. We've also got a look at the best builds in the game, alongside some tips on how to level up fast. But let's take a look at what exactly a Moon Lantern is.

What is the Moon Lantern in Baldur's Gate 3?

The Moon Lantern is a key item in Baldur's Gate 3, and it can be activated to light up your surroundings. However, unlike regular light sources, the Moon Lantern is a source of greater light.

This means that it is able to pierce through the deepest darkness found in the Shadow Cursed Lands with ease, and can protect you from the Curse as you traverse the area. The Shadow Curse is a deadly affliction that damages you every turn and can really hamper your progress.

How to fix the broken lantern

Fixing the broken lantern requires the use of Pixie Dust. However, due to the lack of access to this material, currently, there is no way to fix the Broken Moon Lantern conveniently in the middle of your quest. This isn't cause for concern though, as there are other ways to get your hands on a working Moon Lantern and alternative light sources.

Where to get Moon Lanterns in Baldur's Gate 3

There are actually a couple of ways of getting the Moon Lantern in Baldur's Gate 3.

  • Kill the Drider Kar'Niss (spider creature) and take his staff. While this Moon Lantern does work, it will eventually break if you don't release the Pixie inside due to a possible bug.
    • Releasing the Pixie lets you get a bell, which you can activate to illuminate your surroundings properly. However, this method will not let you identify enemies with the light buff.
  • You can continue on with the quest and follow the Drider in order to get a functional Moon Lantern from within Moonrise Towers.
  • The final alternative is to use a torch until you make your way to the tower and receive the Moon Lantern. Just keep in mind that torches can be disadvantageous.

But there you have it, that's all you need to know about how to fix the Moon Lantern and find more Moon Lanterns to protect against the Shadow Curse.
