While the combat of Baldur's Gate 3 is turn-based and has restricted movement, exploration does not shackle you in any way. If you know how to run in Baldur's Gate 3 and traverse the map quickly, you will be able to burn through all of the interesting quests and other content the game has to offer to players.
While the game does allow you to run, you need to be aware of certain mechanics that will allow you to traverse faster and therefore save time. There are also some limitations in place that you need to know in case you are trying to avoid enemies, so we will go over those mechanics as well.

How to make your character run in Baldur's Gate 3
Baldur's Gate 3 has running enabled by default, and you do not need to perform any specific actions. All you need to do is navigate to an empty space on a map and click on it, and your character will head to that area automatically while running.
If you want to run and not get detected by enemies, there are some tips that we have for you:
- Activate stealth mode from the hotbar
- Navigate your way around enemies
- Disable stealth after you are not in the enemy's line of sight
Stealth mechanics are being reworked for the main game, as during Early Access, players were able to simply go into stealth whenever they felt like and enemies would have a hard time tracking infiltrators. This will not work the same way when the release version of the game is out, as you'll have to carefully position your character and run away from enemies if you don't want to trigger combat sequences.
How encumbrance works
Your ability to run is affected by encumbrance, so you need to even out the loot you are carrying. If you notice that you are running slower than usual, it is because you are encumbered, and are carrying too many items. If you open up your inventory, you will notice the weight of the items you are carrying. If the weight is too high, you will move slower and it also affects your combat abilities.
