Ketheric Thorm on top of Moonrise Towers in act 2 of Baldur's Gate 3

Stuck on the Thorm Mausoleum puzzle in Baldur's Gate 3? It's a challenging yet rewarding dungeon that grants you access to an important part of Act 2, and completing it grants players powerful artefacts plus new insights into the lore of Baldur's Gate.

In the Thorm Mausoleum, you will come across a puzzle involving three buttons. While this may not be the most challenging puzzle in the series, there are some tricky key details you need to know before attempting it.

So upon entering the rear chamber of Thorm Mausoleum, you'll encounter three paintings depicting Ketheric Thorm. For those unfamiliar, Ketheric Thorm was a warrior and the mausoleum serves as his final resting place... or so he'd have you think. Below each painting, you will find a corresponding button. These buttons will need to be pressed in a specific order to solve the puzzle.

How to solve the Thorm Mausoleum puzzle

The three paintings on the walls of Thorm Mausoleum can be interacted with, and upon doing so, players can figure out their titles: GriefMoonrise Towers, and General. Now, before we explain the order in which to press the respective buttons below each painting, keep in mind that there are quite a few traps around this mausoleum.

Firstly, you'll want to dismantle all the traps around the tomb as a precautionary measure. Using your vampire companion Astarion will come in handy in this situation, as his rogue abilities make him perfect for perceiving and then dismantling traps. We'd suggest ungrouping him from your party, so the rest of your squad doesn't accidentally set any traps off that he hasn't gotten around to yet.

So once you've removed the traps, subsequently follow these steps to solve the Thorm Mausoleum puzzle:

  • Head towards the Moonrise Towers painting: This is the painting to the left as soon as you enter the chamber. Press the button below this painting.

So after pressing the last button beneath the statue of the General, the wall in front of you will slide open, revealing an elevator passage. This will be the next stage in your Baldur's Gate journey during the spooky Act 2. It is advisable to keep Shadowheart as your companion going forward from here on, but we won't divulge the reason behind this suggestion. Spoilers!

What happens if you press the buttons in the wrong sequence

Occasionally, even if the correct sequence is input, the door might not immediately respond. But in such instances, there's no need to panic, as this could be a glitch. Therefore, simply repeat the process a few times.

Should players incorrectly sequence the buttons, however, the room will plunge into darkness, and a swarm of bats will be let loose. Naturally, you'll want to avoid finding yourself in this unpleasant situation.
