Baldur's Gate 3 is full of intriguing characters, but very few can match the charisma of Astarion. The enigmatic companion has many players wondering if they can join him in sucking blood every night, and in this guide, we'll share whether or not you can become a vampire in Baldur’s Gate 3.
Vampirism plays a key role in the gameplay and story of Baldur's Gate 3. While Astarion is a certified blood-sucker, he is not a fully-fledged vampire, and doesn't quite share the same autonomy that 'pure' vampires do.

What is the difference between a vampire spawn and vampires in Baldur's Gate 3?
Astarion is a perfect example of a vampire spawn. Created by 'true' vampires, these creatures have gained eternal life and sustain themselves on blood. A vampire spawn can only become a 'true' vampire by drinking the blood of the vampire that made them.
Astarion's vampirism was a 'gift' from the sadistic Cazador Szarr, who treats his spawn poorly. Through dialogue, players can learn about Astarion's treatment under Szarr, and it's not pretty.
How to become a vampire in Baldur's Gate 3
As of the full release of Baldur's Gate 3, players can find and kill Cazador Szarr during the 'Pale Elf' quest, which leads to Astarion becoming a 'true' vampire if players help him complete a ritual.
Naturally, a true vampire is treated to more powerful abilities. The most notable changes are Astarion's bite attack becoming more powerful, and his ego growing tremendously.
Players that romanced Astarion before the ritual can then speak to him at a camp, where another ritual can be performed. The decision to become Astarion's vampire spawn has consequences, but if players go through with it, they unlock the 'Vampire Bite' ability.
This ability is a slightly weaker version of the bite that Astarion begins the game with. When used, it grants 4-16 healing to the player and deals 2-8 piercing damage to enemies. Humanoid enemies become bloodless when bitten, and the attack does not break stealth.
