Does Dead Island 2 have an open world?
Unlike the first game in the series, Dead Island 2 won’t feature open-world mechanics. Yes, you read it right - the game won't really have an open game world. Instead, you can roam around Los Angeles, which is divided into several parts that you can unlock by working through the game.

So the game itself will be linear. When you complete certain tasks in one area, you will get access to another. It's also worth noting that transitioning to a new area will trigger a short loading screen. Although it's inconvenient, they only last a few seconds.
Even though the game will not be an open-world experience, this is not a reason to be disappointed. The game still boasts several areas filled with places to explore and secrets to uncover, so it should be just as rewarding as a regular open world.
Will Dead Island get open-world DLC?
At the time of writing, it's unclear if Dead Island 2 will ever receive an open-world map which might be disappointing for some that want to explore all that Hell-A has to offer without moving from one loading screen to another.
However, there's always a chance Dambuster Studios has something up its sleeve for a future update or some additional content.
