June 2 - Now that Diablo 4 early access has arrived, you may be wondering how all of those currencies work. Here's what you should know.

Obols in Diablo 4 are a distinctive type of currency, which can be traded for Gear or Whispering Keys at the Purveyor of Curiosities, a merchant present in different towns throughout Sanctuary. Obols hold significant value in the game, ranking as the second most important currency after Gold, and they play a crucial role in advancing the character's progression. Unlike Gold, though, Obols cannot be exchanged between players.

In this article, we'll be going over how to get Obols in Diablo 4. Like many other in-game currencies, there are many ways of getting Obols.

How to get Obols in Diablo 4

There are various ways to get Obols in Diablo 4, such as completing Cursed Object events in dungeons, finishing quests that reward Cache, participating in local events with mastery objectives, or simply completing Legions Zone events.

Obtaining Obols from various events in the open world is entirely feasible, and allows players to select those that align with their play style and preferences. Each event typically takes a few minutes to finish, but accomplishing the optional mastery objectives associated with each event will yield additional Obols.

By default, players have a maximum capacity of around 500 Obols that they can carry at any given time. Once they surpass this limit, any additional Obols discovered in Diablo 4 will be forfeited. To prevent this loss, we suggest regularly utilising Obols, or expanding the maximum capacity through the new Renown System. This can be achieved by collecting Altars of Lilith and participating in Renown activities.

By teaming up with other players, you can significantly streamline the completion of these events. It's worth noting that the capacity for Obols is shared among all characters on the account, which means enhancing it on one character will also benefit all other characters.

How to use Obols in Diablo 4

At the Purveyor of Curiosities, there's a unique merchant with whom players have the opportunity to gamble their Obols for a chance to acquire valuable gear or Whispering Keys. This gambling process involves receiving a random piece of gear, which can range from Rare to even Legendary quality. The rarity and item power of the gear obtained are determined by the character's level.

In addition, players have the option to purchase Whispering Keys using Obols, enabling them to unlock Silent Chests scattered throughout the open world as these chests hold valuable loot and resources. Moreover, any gear obtained through gambling or acquired from chests that are deemed unhelpful for progression or redundant in terms of appearance can always be sold for gold or salvaged at the Blacksmith.

It's also important to highlight that the weapons obtained through Obol gambling are tailored to the player's class, ensuring that they only receive weapons that their character can use. The rarity (quality) and item power of the gear acquired not only depend on the character's level, but also involve a bit of luck.

In summary, players can spend Obols by engaging in gear gambling at the Purveyor of Curiosities, or by simply purchasing Whispering Keys for unlocking Silent Chests.

Opening Silent Chests is highly recommended due to the increased likelihood of containing legendary items or rare materials compared to regular chests. These chests are conveniently marked on the map, making it easier for players who possess a key to locate and collect them easily.
