Dragon Age is well known for being a series of choices, from the race you play to the classes you pick. Its background choices in Origins were one of the most memorable features of the game and were well-loved by fans. Now, with a new game on the horizon, we're among the many wondering what Dragon Age The Veilguard character creation is like.
Choosing your character's appearance in Dragon Age: The Veilguard is arguably one of the most important parts of a fantasy RPG. After all, you can't fight evil if you're not cute.
Kidding aside, character creation is a vital way to express yourself and your ideas for your characters. The more options there are, the better you're able to represent those ideas.
In this guide, we'll answer all your questions about Dragon Age: The Veilguard character creation, from the game's character creator choices to the backgrounds (and their level of impact) for player character Rook.

Dragon Age The Veilguard Character Creation Explained
The character creator for Dragon Age: The Veilguard has been described as BioWare's most detailed and comprehensive one yet, giving players numerous options right from the get-go.
After a short narration from Varric Tethras, a key character within the game's narrative and series overall, players will go straight into the character creator. However, you won't just be customizing Rook, but the Inquisitor from Dragon Age: The Inquisition too.
Dragon Age the Veilguard's character creator has five categories, and all will play a key component that makes up your character. These categories are:
- Lineage
- Appearance
- Class
- Faction
- Playstyle
Each category has subcategories involved, such as Lineage, which allows you to pick your race: Human, Elf, Dwarf, or Qunari.
You can choose from six different backgrounds for factions, all of which affect why Rook is recruited to fight Solas in the first place. These factions are Veil Jumpers, Shadow Dragons, Antivan Crows, Lords of Fortune, Grey Wardens, and The Mourn Watch.
Dragon Age The Veilguard Character Creator Features
With such a comprehensive character creator, there are plenty of features that Dragon Age: The Veilguard includes.
Body Type
Whereas in previous games, you had a set body type related to your race (e.g., dwarves are short, qunari are tall, elves are thin and spindly), this time around, players will be able to customize their Rook with the body type they want.
For example, you can make a short qunari or even a tall dwarf, with certain limitations. It also seems as though you'll be able to curate whether your Rook has more body mass or not, which is a feature that's pretty rare in video games that allows for customization.
You can also customize your bulge size. In case anyone was wondering about that. We do not know if you can also customize your breast size, but if not then we'll have some questions.
Hairstyle
As a series, Dragon Age hasn't had the best reputation when it comes to hairstyles. This game looks to change that, with dozens of hairstyle options, including long-haired styles among them. What's more, these options will not be glued to your head the way it was in older games, but will be reactive and fluid to the environments the player character is in.
Facial hair, such as goatees, beards, and the ever-popular scruff option, will also be making a return.
Skin Tones and Types
With the new lighting options in Dragon Age The Veilguard, skin tones and options will be able to thrive in the way they were always meant to. You can change and customize your character's skin undertones, and melanin levels.
It has been confirmed that there are also multiple complexions, ranging from weathered to youthful and freckled skin. There is also vitiligo, which you can adjust the intensity of.
Tattoos
Tattoos have a significant customization option depending on what race you pick, so there is no doubt that we'll see them return in the newest Dragon Age game.
However, in news that will excite everyone, it has also been confirmed that tattoos will be making a return. What's more, these tattoos can be placed anywhere on Rook's body, meaning face, arms, legs and body. With the addition of nudity, you'll be able to see your Rook's tattoos whenever you like.
Voice
Dragon Age: The Veilguard offers four voice options. Similar to Dragon Age Inquisition, there will be two feminine and two masculine options, and they will have British or American accents to choose from. Neither of these voices is genderlocked.
Can You Be Non-Binary in Dragon Age The Veilguard?
Alongside being able to customize your character physically, players will be able to choose what pronouns they use such as she/her, he/him and they/them.
Will Dragon Age The Veilguard Character Creator Have Prosthetics?
While there are a handful of characters who have been shown to have prosthetics in Dragon Age The Veilguard, it has not been confirmed yet whether or not players will be able to give their characters prosthetics in the character creator.
Can You Change Your Look in Dragon Age The Veilguard?
It has been confirmed that you can change your look in Dragon Age The Veilguard at any point in the game. This was similar to how you could in Dragon Age 2, with the Black Emporium mirror. As of the time of writing though, we do not know how players will be able to do so. If we do get more confirmation on that, we'll update this guide accordingly.
