Dragon Age The Veilguard companions have officially been revealed, and they look just as memorable as characters from the previous three Dragon Age games.

It's been 10 years since the last Dragon Age game, and as to be expected, fans are chomping at the bit to find out more about the cast of characters that will be accompanying them throughout their adventures through Thedas.

In this Dragon Age The Veilguard Companions guide, we'll be highlighting each companion, speculating more about their role within the story of the game, and lots more. We'll also be updating this guide accordingly with new information, so be sure to come back regularly!

How Many Companions Are There In Dragon Age The Veilguard?

In previous Dragon Age games, the number of companions have somewhat differed. In Dragon Age: Origins you had 10 overall companions, Dragon Age 2 had 9, and Dragon Age: Inquisition also had 9.

For Dragon Age The Veilguard however, the number of companions have dropped from that number to 7. The reason for this, as General Manager and Executive Producer at BioWare Gay McKay elaborates in a separate blog post, is because its the right number for the story the developers want to tell.

"Each of the seven unique characters that make up your companions will have deep and compelling storylines where the decisions you make will impact your relationships with them – as well as their lives." McKay says. "You’ll unite this team of unforgettable heroes as you take on a terrifying new threat unleashed on the world. Naturally, the Dread Wolf still has an important part in this tale, but you and your companions – not your enemies – are the heart of this new experience.”

Dragon Age The Veilguard Companions Roster

As mentioned above, there are several companions that will be journeying alongside Rook in Dragon Age The Veilguard. Thanks to a trailer shared by BioWare at the Summer Games Fest 2024, we now know exactly who they are.

These companions are:

  • Taash, a dragon hunter who is allied with an organization called Lords of Fortune. It is speculated that they are non-binary, but this has not yet been confirmed.
  • Harding, a scout that originally appeared in Dragon Age: Inquisition. She's sassy, but kind-hearted and isn't afraid to jump into the fight to help others.
  • Bellara, an energetic elf known as a Veil Jumper who is obsessed with uncovering ancient secrets. She sports vallaslin, so could she be Dalish? This is not yet confirmed.
  • Neve, a private detective from Tevinter and a member of the rebel group, Shadow Dragons.
  • Davrin, a charming Grey Warden who has turned to monster hunting to make a name for himself. He has a baby griffin.
  • Emmrich, an older gentleman / necromancer who is part of Nevarra's Mourn Watch. He is accompanied by his skeletal assistant, Manfred. You can find out more about Emmrich in the short story 'Down Among the Dead Men' in the Dragon Age novel, 'Tevinter Nights.'
  • Lucanis, an assassin from the bloodline of The House of Crows. Pragmatic and poised, Lucanis is a force to be reckoned with.

Dragon Age The Veilguard Cameo Companions

Cameo companions appear either for a mission, or as a NPC that accompanies the party. For example, Tallis in Dragon Age 2 would be considered a cameo companion due to her involvement in the Mask of the Assassin DLC.

Currently there are no cameo companions confirmed, though we have seen Varric involved in both the companion trailer and the short gameplay segment that was teased.

It is also fair to speculate that the previous game's protagonist, The Inquisitor, may also make an appearance as a cameo companion after it was confirmed that players would be able to create them during the start of Dragon Age The Veilguard.
