The Mountaincleaver in Dragon Quest 3 Remake is an important weapon that shapes the flow of the game.
This sword was previously known as the Sword of Gaia or Gaia Sword. It can be equipped by the Hero and Warrior classes, offering a +51 attack bonus.
This article covers how to get the Mountaincleaver in the Dragon Quest 3 Remake.
How To Get The Mountaincleaver
Your first stop is the Teleportal Shrine, which is down in the snowy southeast of Grimland.
Use the portal on the right to arrive at the Wayfarer’s Chapel, an isolated island inaccessible by boat because of the mountains.
From here, travel west to the kingdom of Manoza and find a way into the castle. Use the servants' side entrance to slip into Manoza Castle.
Although you can explore at night, the main goal is to enter in the daytime. This leads to an encounter with the king, and you’ll end up locked up.
Fortunately, having the Ultimate Key at this point allows you to escape the jail without trouble.
During your escape, you’ll find the real king also imprisoned. You’ll learn what you need to know about the impostor king to know your next move.
Once you're out of the castle, go southeast toward Manoza Cave. Go down the stairs to the cave and find a pit.
Hop into the pit to find a chest containing Ra’s Mirror, which can reveal the impostor king's secret.
Take this chance to search the cave for more treasures or grind for EXP to prepare for future challenges.
Return to Manoza with Ra’s Mirror in hand. Wait for night to fall, then enter the castle through the servants' entrance again.
Climb the towers and leap onto the roof to enter the king’s chamber. Use Ra's Mirror on the sleeping king to expose his true form as a Boss Troll.
Take down this powerful foe using spells like Oomph to strengthen your party and Kabuff to increase your defense.
Once the Boss Troll is defeated, you will receive the Mod Rod. Now that you have the Mod Rod head back to Grimland and find the old man living in a house on the hill.
The Mod Rod has the quirky ability to change your party into creatures like Slimes or Dwarves.
Trade the Mod Rod with the old man to receive the Boatman’s Bone. You can track down the Ghost Ship drifting south of Romaria using the Boatman's Bone.
Board the ship and explore its eerie interior. Direct your search to the lower deck, especially the southern area, where the Lover's Locket can be found.
The next step is to sail toward Olivia's Promontory, a haunted area northeast of Romaria.
The mournful cries of Olivia’s ghost previously prevented ships from passing through this narrow passage.
However, with the Lover’s Locket, Olivia’s spirit will reunite with her lost lover and find peace.
This clears the way for your ship to pass through the strait and reach the Shrine of Shackles.
As you enter, head down to the lower levels where the jail cells are.
Head to the left cell to discover an extra story segment expanding the game’s lore.
When the scene ends, move to the right cell. Inside, you’ll find the Mountaincleaver resting near a skeleton on a mattress.
