Best Companions in Fallout 4

Like other games from Bethesda, Fallout 4 allows you to recruit NPCs to your cause and have them tag along on your adventures. Each companion is unique in personality and playstyle, so here’s a list of what many consider to be the best of the bunch.

Nick Valentine

This detective is an old synth prototype that has gained free will. He’ll wield his trusty revolver in battle, but his true value lies in his ability to hack high-level terminals. After building up your relationship with this companion, Nick will give the player the Close to Metal perk which will give you an extra try during hacks and lowers the wait time between hacks by 50%.

Nick Valentine will be able to join you after completing the quest Getting a Clue. You can find him in Vault 114.

Paladin Danse

Clad in impregnable armour and skilled with a Laser Rifle, many consider Danse to be their favourite companion. He also has a perk that gives players a 20% damage buff against super mutants, ghouls, and synthetics.

Paladin Danse can join you during the Tour of Duty quest. You can find him at the Cambridge Police Station, The Prydwen, or at Listening Post Bravo.

Strong

Large, imposing, and extremely loyal, Strong has the potential to be a valuable ally. The super mutant also does well in a fight especially when wielding assault rifles and sledgehammers. Unlocking his perk will give players a 20% weapon damage boost when low on health.

Strong can join you after completing the Curtain Call quest. You can find him at Trinity Tower.

Preston Garvey

Armed with a Laser Musket and a cool-looking hat, Preston is as reliable as they come. His Perk, United We Stand, is considered by many to be the best in the game. When unlocked, this Perk will give players a 20% damage bonus and damage resistance when facing three or more enemies.

Preston Garvey can join you after finishing the First Step quest. You can find him in the Museum of Freedom or Sanctuary Hills.

Curie

A well-balanced companion who is widely believed to be the best in the game. You will have to transfer her consciousness into a synth though since travelling with her in her Mr. Handy form may be more of a liability.

Curie becomes available after completing the Hole in the Wall quest. She is located in Vault 81.
