How to change characters in Granblue Fantasy Relink
To change your character, you need to head into the main menu and navigate to the Party tab. Here, you will see four slots for your party and the first slot will always belong to the player-controlled character with the other three being controlled by the CPU during combat.
To change your active character, select the Captain in the first slot and swap them out with whoever you want to take their place.
It's worth noting that you cannot control the other members of your party and you have very limited control over them. Also note that the Captain always has to be a part of your team, so you cannot remove them.
Can you change characters during combat?
No, you cannot change characters in the middle of combat in Granblue Fantasy Relink. You can only change it while you are outside combat by accessing the party menu. If you try to open a menu during combat, you will be greeted by a completely different menu screen.
This is a bit disappointing as the ability to swap characters would allow for some cool combo chaining. Nevertheless, it's still possible with friends once you get into multiplayer.
