A battle with a Terastalized Pokémon
November 25, 2022: We have checked over all of our information

Welcome, Trainers, to the Paldea region! Generation nine brings in a lot of new ways to battle with our Pokemon, so let's look at how to change Tera types in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet!

Our journey into Paldea is just beginning, and we're excited to try the new Terastal phenomenon for ourselves. Terastalizing in battles is sure to bring a lot of new options and depth into our fights with wild Pokémon, Titans, and our friends.

To help you get started in the new region of Paldea, we recommend checking out how to get Herba Mystica, where you can find Rare Candy, and all the sandwich recipes that you can make at the Picnics for boosts in the game!

How to change Tera types in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

To change the Tera Type of your party of Pokémon, you'll need to visit a restaurant in Medali, a city in Northern Paldea, where you'll find a chef behind the counter that can make special dishes that will permanently change your Pokemon's Tera type.

Each change costs 50 Tera Shards, and they have to be the corresponding type to the Tera Type you want.

Where do I get Tera Shards?

Tera Shards can be hard to gain, especially in the amount we need to change a Tera Type. The shards are mostly found after a Tera Raid battle, but there are some other ways to get them, too.

On your first visit to the restaurant in Medali, the chef will give you 50 Normal Type Shards. But, that's only enough for one change - and just to the Normal type.

Attending classes at the Academy will grant you some Shards, but you'll need to read up on things like the Biology, Art, and Home Ec answers to pass the exams.

On top of that, you can find them lying around in certain locations. Area Zero is especially good for them, but you won't end up there until the later chapters of the game.

It's important to note that not all Tera Raids will drop Tera Shards. Only three-star and higher raids will drop them, making them similar to Herba Mystica needed to effectively farm shiny Pokemon in Scarlet and Violet.

What are Tera types?

'Tera types' are the types that Pokémon turn into when they Terastalize in battle.

This type can be different to their usual type and can be changed with the Tera Shards. For instance, Pikachu is usually an Electric type, but can become Flying-type when Terastalized!
