In an open-world survival game like SCUM, you have to sustain yourself by getting food by any means possible, but sometimes it's not always straightforward.
You can actually get food in various ways, such as foraging in the forest areas of the map or hunting down animals in the wild. While that sounds simple enough, ensuring you have sufficient supplies and cook food properly is another matter!

I'd say that there are two ways to cook food in SCUM 1.0: one involves using a campfire, and the other utilizes appliances and kitchen utensils. It's easier to do the campfire one, so let's start with that first.
How to Cook Over a Campfire
Before cooking anything, you'll need to find some meat to cook over the fire. You can find some chickens around and pluck them with a knife. You can right-click on the chicken and chop it. Afterwards, collect the chicken meat (and any other usable materials, such as the feathers).
Of course, you'll need to start a fire to begin cooking. Once you have that going, you can open the crafting menu. You'll then see "Skewer" on the right side of the menu. Click on the icon under "Skewer" to add a recipe, and you'll see ones that you can begin cooking.
click to enlarge + 4Once you have selected the skewer that you want (in this case, the meat skewer, assuming that you have chicken meat), then you can drag the meat you have in your inventory to the meat slot on the right side.
Click on the chef's hat to begin cooking. It may take some time to cook the food, so be vigilant if you're out in the open, as potential threats can come your way at any time.
How to Cook with Appliances or a Stove
Cooking will be the same as when using fire; press F to start cooking, which brings up the cooking menu. However, this prompt will not appear if you don't have the necessary kitchen tools. You'll need pots and pans to cook food, a functional stove (which can be gas or electric-powered), and a gas tank or generator, depending on your specific needs.
As you scavenge through the towns, you can see if they have a stove. Most of them aren't functional, so you'll need to find one that looks okay. Once you find a functional one, or can find a portable gas or electric stove, you'll then need to find a gas tank or generator.
You can find gas tanks and generators in most garages (but they are considered rare loot), and the chances are they'll have already been looted in PvE or PvP servers. It never hurts to take a second look, as you may get lucky and find one that was left behind. The gas tanks can be refilled at gas stations.
click to enlarge + 4For the oven, you also need an electric source. It's best to build your base where you can store these items safely, as they are pretty valuable in SCUM.
I'd also suggest getting optional ingredients like salt and pepper when you come across them, as you'll need them later on.
Where Can I Find Recipes?
There are many foods that you can cook in SCUM, but you will need to find cookbooks for the recipes beyond the basic ones you already know. You can have more cooking recipes by getting cookbooks. Most of these are typically found in the kitchen of a house (make sure to check the trash bag) and also on bookshelves.
You can check the outer buildings near the hospital in B0, where there's a fair amount of loot as well. Some possible areas are the school, where there are libraries, as well as in medical facilities. Just check all the shelves and see if you're lucky.
However, be cautious, as danger may be lurking around. I'd recommend getting geared up and ready before heading to possible high-spawn zones or populated areas. Whether in single-player mode or on a public server, it's always best to execute plans when prepared.
How to Cook Food Perfectly
To cook food perfectly, you will need to add all the ingredients that are listed when cooking. This includes all the optional ones. But you might be wondering, why do you need to cook them perfectly?

It might not be a significant problem if you have already established a base for storing cookbooks, but I say go for perfect meals when you have the ingredients, so that you can cook on the go as well.
