Gamepires’ survival game SCUM has officially escaped Early Access and entered version 1.0 after seven long years. Over time, it has built a loyal fanbase of survival enthusiasts, plunging them deep into its weird and fascinating Supermax Island, with consistent support along the way.

Now that 1.0 is here, the island feels more alive than ever, but how does it hold up for new players? Let’s find out.

Is SCUM 1.0 Ideal for New Players?

Yes, but with a word of caution: This game is the result of years of development and is populated by a player base that already knows SCUM inside and out.

New players will have to wade through a flood of information: items, weapons, tools, and complex mechanics. If you’ve seen the game’s trailer, most of what’s shown is endgame content you won’t access until you’ve mastered survival.

The game’s in-depth health system can be intimidating at first, but once you figure out what to prioritize, it becomes manageable. Genre veterans are no strangers to grind and info overload, but just know that it takes some time to get to the real core of the game.

There are two main modes: a solo Sandbox mode, where you explore and survive the island on your own, and a multiplayer mode, where you share the world with up to 79 other players. Whether you prefer PvE or PvP, there’s a wide selection of servers to choose from.

Can I Play SCUM 1.0 with Friends?

Working together.

Much like DayZ or Project Zomboid, the experience becomes more dynamic (and often hilarious) when shared. You can explore the island, uncover hidden bunkers, or just mess around (yes, even urinate or defecate near each other… though we don’t recommend it).

And if you’re flying solo, don’t worry, SCUM has an active and welcoming community. You’ll find helpful players on the subreddit and in Discord channels.

Yes, there are Mechs here.

SCUM is still the same open-world survival sandbox that launched in 2018 with all the features fans have come to love. Now, it's moving forward with a detailed content roadmap, and there’s plenty more on the horizon even after this milestone release.

What If It’s Not for Me?

That’s perfectly okay. Not every game is for everyone.

SCUM has been shaped by an existing community, and it might feel overwhelming to jump in now, but that’s also why this 1.0 release matters. It marks the best time to try it out and see what Gamepires’ unique “prison-riot survival game” has to offer.

It might not click right away, but with the right gear and a few consistent (and crazy) friends, it might just win you over.

Toggling Third Person and First Person is easy.

And if it doesn’t resonate with you the way it has with the game’s 22,000+ current players? That’s fine too.

SCUM 1.0 is available now, and you can grab cosmetic skins and freebies by tuning into supported Twitch streamers.
