Silent Hill 2 Remake's hospital generator powers Brookhaven Hospital's elevator, which is needed to access different floors. Besides the elevator, the generator also supplies power to specific doors and systems within the hospital.
Powering up the generator early prevents you from getting stuck later in the game when you need to move between floors, even if it doesn't immediately impact other areas. Here’s how to get the hospital generator running in Silent Hill 2 Remake.
How To Turn on the Hospital Generator in Silent Hill 2 Remake
Before you can access the generator, you first need to locate the basement key. This is tied to a puzzle on the hospital's first floor (1F).

+ 2The first challenge is to solve a padlock puzzle at the reception. The solution depends on the difficulty level you’re playing on.
- Standard difficulty - The code is based on interpreting the number of specific items, such as nurses, doctors, and trees, depicted in photos scattered around the reception area. For example, if you see seven nurses, two doctors, and four trees, your code would be
7-2-4. - Hard Difficulty - This puzzle requires more interpretation. Instead of counting the nurses, doctors, and trees in the photos, you’ll need to interpret additional hints found in nearby notes. These clues might involve adjusting the numbers precisely, requiring you to pay close attention to any context provided. This means that even if you see seven nurses, you might have to reduce the count by one or more, giving you a code like
1-5-2.
Once you input the correct code, you’ll receive the Basement Key. Use the key to access the basement via a staircase on the southeast side of the first floor (1F). Expect enemies in the corridor before reaching the generator.
click to enlarge + 2You can rely on early melee weapons like the Steel Pipe if you haven't acquired any guns yet. They require close combat but can still fight enemies in the hospital corridors.
The generator is located in a designated room in the basement. However, it won’t be functional until you fuel it up. Before moving forward, make note of this room’s location so you can return here after gathering the necessary items. To refuel the generator, you need to find an empty can.
Head to the Boiler Room (marked as Room 0.10 in the basement) to retrieve it. The can is placed in a corner of the room, so search carefully. Fill the can with fuel and go to the Laundry Storage area (Room 0.5), where you can push a laundry cart into another room (Room 0.8).
Doing this unlocks a hidden path leading to a fuel tank (Room 0.9). Use the tank to fill the empty can with fuel. Once the can is filled, return to the basement and refuel the machine.
After fueling it, simply flip the switch to power it on. This will activate the hospital’s elevator, giving you access to higher floors.
