How do books work in Stardew Valley?
Books are an extremely straightforward feature to master in Stardew Valley. You can find books by fishing, mining, or foraging if you're looking to save some gold but if you have some to spend, heading to the Bookseller to buy them is the easier option.
Owning books allows you to read them and receive a range of upgrades and perks listed in the item description. For example, the Book of Stars provides you with additional EXP across all skills.
Stardew Valley Bookseller location
The Stardew Valley Bookseller appears northeast of Joja Mart. You can see when he's in town as you can see a hot-air balloon to the east of Pelican Town.
Stardew Valley Bookseller schedule
You can easily find the days the bookseller will arrive in town. Just head to Pierre's shop, look for the noticeboard outside, and see the dates on the calendar when the bookseller is around.
During each season, the Bookseller will visit twice. The calendar will confirm when the vendor is in town alongside the day, featuring a small blue hot-air balloon icon. Here are the possible dates when the Bookseller comes to visit:
- Spring: Days 11, 12, 21, 22, and 25
- Summer: Days 9, 12, 18, 26, and 27
- Fall: Days 4, 7, 8, 9, 12, 19, 22, and 25
- Winter: Days 5, 11, 12, 19, 22, and 24
Alongside the balloon icon, you'll also receive a message: "The Bookseller is in town today" when you wake up.

When visiting the Bookseller when he's in town, you have the choice to purchase new books or trade them for some items used for other tasks.
Buying books
Buying books provides you with a new perk ranging from additional horse riding speeds or additional EXP for specific skills. This option also involves spending some gold so make sure you have some ready to get hold of some new reading material.
Trading books
- Exchanging a book gives you an option to earn items including Deluxe Bait or Fairy Dust. The book will disappear from the inventory and be replaced with an item.
