Starfield companions explained

Starfield takes and improves the best features from all previously released Bethesda games. Unsurprisingly, companions are no exception. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion seems to be the main inspiration for companions in the upcoming release. Even though it is yet to be officially confirmed, in one of the Into the Starfield videos, Todd Howard showed companions significantly similar to those in Elder Scrolls.

In terms of speculation, it's worth remembering that Starfield is a game about space. Therefore, most companions in this game are likely to be robots, but this has yet to be officially confirmed.

How do Starfield companions work?

Now let’s discover why Bethesda decided to add companions to Starfield. First, it will diversify the gameplay and make it more realistic and engrossing.

Also, companions can work as crew members and look after your starships when you cannot do it. Therefore, companions are likely to be one of the most important parts of Starfield, similar to your townsfolk in Fallout 4.

According to the Into the Starfield video, another purpose of companions is to "comment off the cuff about something that you’re checking out or something that just happened." While completing missions or quests, valuable comments might help you find the correct solution or alert you to an enemy presence.

Like with previous Bethesda games, companions will be able to hold gear and help you in combat. They may not be the most useful against tough enemies, but it's always handy to have a helping hand during fights with ordinary NPCs. You can be sure that having a powerful companion will always come in handy.

As one of the foremost Starfield developers, Istvan Pely said, Vasco is one of the best ideas created for Starfield. It was first shown during one of the first Starfield trailers. But as rumours about this companion started appearing more often, Bethesda decided to make a specific YouTube video about Vasco.

Will there be more companions in Starfield?

At the moment of writing, there is no official confirmation about adding more companions to Starfield. The only officially confirmed friend is Vasco. But in a game as sprawling as this, there's bound to be plenty more.

Starfield is planned to be Bethesda's biggest game yet. The game’s open world will include over 1,000 planets and 100 systems. Having just one companion is not enough to diversify the gameplay and attract players.

There are no official comments about new companions, but there are plenty of ways developers can add them to the game. There can be unique friends for each faction, allowing people to upgrade them while progressing.

That’s it for our look at companions in Starfield! While we wait to learn more about the game, read up on how the persuasion dialogue system works, as well as the full weapons list so far.
