November 9, 2023: Now that we've seen how Starfield's epic story plays out, we can shed some light on what happens in the New Game Plus version!

Once you've wrapped up your first playthrough, you'll want to know whether a Starfield New Game Plus mode exists. Fortunately, we can shed light on what happens once you complete your first playthrough of the title.

In this guide, we'll break down whether Starfield has a New Game Plus mode or not. Alongside that, we'll then let you know what the mode consists of, considering it isn't something Bethesda games tend to have as an endgame feature.

Does Starfield have New Game Plus?

Yes, Starfield does have a New Game Plus mode. As such, once you wrap up the main quest and finish your first playthrough, you'll be able to dive back in all over again.

The good news was confirmed in an interview by GQ with Todd Howard, Starfield's Game Director and Bethesda mainstay. While there isn't a direct quote in there, the writer confirms that there's a "unique and exciting twist on New Game+ to incentivise continued and repeat play."

As such, there's no longer any question as to whether a New Game Plus mode will be present in Starfield. You'll absolutely be able to jump into the intergalactic action all over again, as soon as you've rolled credits.

What is included in Starfield New Game Plus?

One thing that was originally unclear was exactly what the Starfield New Game Plus will consist of. It's the first time a major first-party Bethesda game has included this feature, so anything could've been on the cards. Thankfully, we now have the answers to this.

Unfortunately for those who have put tireless hours of painstaking work into their ships, houses, and outposts, you will be saddened to know that all of this will be wiped once you start the New Game Plus experience. The storyline essentially operates on an endless loop, with the only thing you retain being your player level, challenge progress, and XP.

As you are essentially going into the new game with a clean slate, you can anticipate that the relationships you have built and all of the gear you have acquired will be lost. While this is unfortunate if you have an attachment to some of your items or friends, it is an opportunity to forge a new path and make different decisions to your original story (unless you have your heart set on repeating history, of course)

What's most interesting is the allusions in that GQ article about a "unique and exciting twist" on the New Game Plus model. What we have now found out is that this model differs from others on the market by giving players a relative amount of choice that hasn't been seen before.

Upon completion of the game, you will have the option to complete the story from the very beginning or participate in a condensed version of it. As an added bonus, you'll find several new dialogue options in the second run-through, not to mention a brand new, very slick and very shiny ship to explore the galaxy in!

It is worth noting that you certainly don't have to jump into Starfield's New Game Plus once you've completed the main story. The game has hundreds and hundreds of hours worth of side quests, outpost building, and space exploration to keep you more than preoccupied. However, should you change your mind, you can always go back and select the New Game Plus option at a later time.
