How many religions are there in Starfield?

As previously revealed during a Developer Q&A on the Starfield YouTube channel, Starfield will feature a total of three unique religions. These religions are as follows:

  • House Va’ruun
  • Sanctum Universum
  • The Enlightened

Each region adopts a specific belief system, significantly shaping your character's lore. The character creation phase will offer the opportunity to select your preferred region, thereby determining your character's background and development within the chosen belief framework.

Starfield religion guide

As previously stated, these religions hold a distinct place within Starfield's vast universe, coexisting with the world's existing major belief systems. Here's a brief overview of each religion and its core objectives.

House Va’ruun

Labelling House Va'ruun as the most enigmatic and captivating religion in the Starfield universe wouldn't be far from the truth. Central to this faith is the concept of the 'Great Serpent' and its devotees. To simplify, consider the Great Serpent as a giant entity (or a reptile) that encircles the entire universe.

These are very small details that were presented by developers Emil Pagliarulo and Will Shen. The lore involves a colonist who introduces the notion of the Great Serpent to fellow passengers. Undoubtedly, in crafting the most fervent religion, the developers deliberately maintain an aura of mystery around it.

Sanctum Universum

The core notion of Sanctum Universum is rather uncomplicated: a central faith in the existence of a higher power within the cosmos. Followers, often referred to as "Universals," are driven by humanity's natural inclination to journey across galaxies. Their objective is to employ scientific exploration in the pursuit of discovering this divine entity. Their aim is to maintain cosmic balance, often through rituals and practices connecting them to celestial forces.

The Enlightened

The last inclusion in the roster of religions is The Enlightened. In stark contrast to Sanctum Universum and House Va'ruum, the developers pursued a wholly different path in crafting this faith. Here, there's no notion of venerating a supreme entity.

You could characterise it as a philosophical stance, with a hint of atheism. The primary thrust is devoting science and technology to propel human progress and betterment, steering clear of expending energy in the pursuit of a deity, as seen in Sanctum's case.

How to choose the religion in Starfield?

As you have understood all the religions that Starfield has to offer, now the question arises of how to choose the particular religion. Don't worry, as it's fairly a simple task. Within the character creation phase, you'll be presented with the opportunity to select your desired religion from the aforementioned assortment. However, whether this choice remains optional or mandatory is still awaiting confirmation.
