Learning how to change difficulty in Super Mario RPG is crucial if you're having too hard a time in the latest Mario game, or if it's far too easy for you.
Unlike most mainline Mario games, including Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Super Mario RPG does include the ability to swap the difficulty level. We'll teach you how to do this, while also outlining the options available.

How to change difficulty in Super Mario RPG
To change difficulty level in Super Mario RPG, this is what you need to do:
- Press the + button to bring up the Super Mario RPG pause menu.
- Then click Settings, and look for the difficulty option.
- Select A to see the options, and then A again to confirm which one you want to use.
On top of that, you can set the difficulty level when you first start a save in Super Mario RPG. That way, you can select the right one for you right at the beginning, but can also go in and switch it out if you're finding it a bit too easy.
All Super Mario RPG difficulty settings
So far, we know of two confirmed difficulty settings in Super Mario RPG. They are as follows:
- Normal: Battles are balanced normally in this mode. Play this if you want to enjoy the challenge. Normal mode forces you to carry less items (any that can't fit in the storage box will be lost)
- Breezy: Battles are easier in this mode. Choose this if you want to quickly progress the story
There's also every chance that after you've finished Super Mario RPG for the first time, a new and harder difficulty setting will be unlocked. That's something we'll have to wait and see once hardcore players have got through the campaign.
