There's a whole new soundtrack to enjoy in the new and improved Super Mario RPG. Nintendo knew that many players would enjoy hearing music from the 1996 original, so in this guide, we'll explain how to change music in Super Mario RPG.
We've previously called Super Mario RPG's remake the game you know and love, and it's clear that Nintendo wanted to channel the soul of the original while making some changes that are sure to impress returning fans. Music is subjective, so you'd be forgiven for wanting the nostalgic notes of the old soundtrack accompanying the gameplay.

How to toggle original music in Super Mario RPG
Right from the get-go, you can change up the soundtrack in a few short button presses. It isn't a permanent decision - players can switch between the old and new music at any time.
- Open the main menu by pressing the '+' button
- Scroll down and open the System menu
- Choose 'Settings'
- Toggle 'Classic' for the original Super Mario RPG's music
- Toggle back to Modern for the 2023 remake's music
The 1996 game's soundtrack was composed by Yoko Shimomura, who considered the game's score to be a turning point in her career. It's nice to see that Nintendo has paid its respects to Shimomura's hard work, and we'll hopefully see other remakes continue the trend.
Fans may be surprised that the original game's soundtrack features some musical arrangements from other games. Musicians often reference and remix each others' works, but a fascinating crossover is heard as three tracks in Mario RPG are rearrangements of Nobuo Uematsu's music from Final Fantasy IV.
Many of Koji Kondo's iconic tracks from the original Super Mario Bros are also present for everything from the Bowser fight to getting an invincibility star. Thankfully, there's no option to enable voice acting by Chris Pratt.
That's everything we can tell you about changing up the music in Super Mario RPG. Before you go, learn how to heal, find the Signal Ring, and equip gear so your party always comes out on top.
