Umamusume Pretty Derby is a gacha horse racing game that's exploded in popularity after its global release. The global version became available this year through Steam, Android, and iOS. Training in the game is important as it determines the horse girl's stats, which is done through the Career Mode. With that in mind, you should understand the stats and what you should focus on.

You will be training the girls for the race, which is considered to be the main part of Umamusume. This can be done by going through a horse girl's career mode. You can start training some of the more manageable horse girls, such as Sakura Bakushin O and Vodka.

Umamusume: Pretty Derby Stats Explained

I'm sure that many beginners in Umamusume Pretty Derby want to understand what they need to do to make their horse girls better. Read on to find out what each stat does and which ones are the best to prioritize.

What are Stats in Umamusume?

Stats are what make your Umamusume shine. It also determines which races she'd be able to perform the best.

There are five core stats in Umamusume Pretty Derby. They are Speed, Stamina, Power, Guts, and Wit. Most of these stats are self-explanatory, but we'll dive deeper into each one.

  • Speed: Perhaps the most important stat in Umamusume. Speed determines how fast your Umamusume runs on the track. This allows your horse girl to run past her opponents. You will need to put in Speed, no matter what race you'll participate in. However, you can put a lot of training into Speed if you're racing short distances.
  • Stamina: Stamina is your horse girl's energy and endurance. The higher the Stamina, the more she can continue without falling behind. Other factors will affect the race, but generally, you want to have higher Stamina in longer races. Also, you most likely won't need this in short-distance races.
  • Power: This stat matters for acceleration and helps with your Uma's positioning in the race. It's how effectively she can overtake other horse girls.
  • Guts: Many players of Umamusume Pretty Derby, experienced or not, can be confused about what Guts actually do. It seems to be a determining factor on whether your Uma can continue on with the race or fail, mostly seen in longer races.
  • Wit: Wit determines the chances of your Uma's skill activation. It also affects stamina preservation and lowers the chances of your Uma making mistakes. While it won't be a lot of help physically, it's important not to neglect your horse girl's Wit to ensure that she's utilizing her skills effectively.

Take note that training is RNG (which also includes events in the Career Mode), so it'll be up to chance whether you'll have good additions to your stats.

Which Stats Should You Focus On?

The stat priorities will depend on the length of the races. Also, pay attention to the bonuses on each of your Umamusume. Generally, it's best to have high Speed. Then, the rest will depend on how long the races are and other factors.

  • Sprint/Mile: Speed > Power > Guts > Wit > Stamina
You can dump most of the training into Speed since you'll need your horse girl to run as fast as possible. Second priority is Power, since you want your Uma to be able to fasten her pace in a short amount of time. As these are mostly short distances, you don't have to put a lot of training into Stamina since she doesn't need a lot of endurance for this. It will be a waste of resources if you do.
  • Medium: Speed > Stamina = Power > Wit > Guts
For medium races, it's important to have a good amount of balance in Stamina and Speed. I'd say you can put most of the training into Speed, but make sure to have enough Stamina for her to last the race. Power's good for acceleration and overtaking. I won't think too much about Guts in medium races since I'm pretty sure you'll have enough Stamina for the whole duration.
  • Long: Speed = Stamina > Power > Guts > Wit
For long distances, you will want to put in a lot of training into Speed and Stamina. It is best to put in around 50 to 60% into Speed, then around 30% into Stamina. I'd say that having higher Guts than Wit in long races helps since you need that extra boost if your horse girl's Stamina fails for the last spurt.

Of course, everything that you read here is only a suggestion. You are always welcome to explore other training stat prioritizations, and assess what may be best for your Uma. Also, don't be discouraged from training horse girls such as Gold Ship (who can be frustrating to build for most players), and use them as a challenge to make them shine.
