We have no idea how Nintendo managed to keep the Depths a secret until launch, but the brand new area completely changes the land of Hyrule. Below Hyrule, anyway. In order to fully explore the underground map, you’ll want to know how to light up the Depths in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom first.
Not only does the area introduce a few different game mechanics and mobs to The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, but it’s also a sprawling new area to while away the hours. You'll find a couple of quests that make great use of the space, but you're free to throw yourself it into without them.
How to light up the Depths in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom
If you’ve tried exploring the Depths before, then you’ve probably come across this one problem already.
The thing about the Depths is that it's dark. Very dark. Not only does this make it difficult to explore, but the gloom mechanic also makes it very dangerous. If the gloom touches you, then you’ll take damage. That’s not even mentioning all of the mobs and pitfalls.
Thankfully, there’s a very easy way to light up the Depths in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom. You’ll need to get your hands on Brightbloom Seeds. These aren’t found in the Depths, but are very popular in the caves on the surface, such as Passeri Greenbelt Cave. Bubbulfrogs will lead you to these caverns, too.
Once you have a healthy stock of Brightbloom Seeds, you can throw them to illuminate the Depths. You can also attach them to arrows to fire them further into the darkness. Once they hit the floor, they’ll act like a small torch and light up the immediate area around them. Use larger seeds for a wider effect.
If you get further into the Depths, you’ll also come across a Lightroot area. Once you activate them, a large flower will bloom and light up the entire area. They will also fill in sections of the map for you, so make sure you prioritise finding these while you explore!
