J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World hasn’t been flying high since the Potter movies ended, but they got a win last year with the release of the prequel game Hogwarts Legacy.

Although the game was released only a year ago, many fans have been gushing about it, saying it’s one of the more extensive gaming experiences in the world of Harry Potter.

The game sold more than 12 million copies globally in the two weeks following its launch. By October 2024, it had sold 30 million units and generated $1 billion in revenue. Unsurprisingly, a sequel has been announced, but what do we know about it so far?

Hogwarts Legacy Sequel Announced

In a new report from Variety, it’s been confirmed that developers at Avalanche Software are already working to develop the sequel to Hogwarts Legacy. What’s more, it’s said that the project is currently a ‘very big priority’ for the people over at Warner Bros.

No details have been released about the story, but it’s also said that the game will coordinate with the upcoming Harry Potter reboot that’s in the works at HBO.

The only detail we know about the game’s connection to the series is that the developers are ‘coordinating some of the big-picture storytelling elements’ in both games.

What could the Sequel be About?

Just like with Rings of Power, Hogwarts Legacy decided to do a prequel spinoff and set the story a hundred years before the events of the Potter movies—specifically around the end of the 1800s. This way, the game can introduce many familiar elements about Hogwarts without relying too much on established characters since Dumbledore or Voldemort aren’t even alive yet.

With the sequel, though, it’s possible that Hogwarts Legacy could be moving the timeline forward, considering that they are currently coordinating with the upcoming Potter reboot.

Regarding the game's canon, Legacy tries to meld continuity between the book and the films. This could undoubtedly influence the look and feel of the HBO reboot.

Though a game set in the Potter era seems like a no-brainer, that would lock down any chances to be creative with the game’s narrative. At best, they can make a story based on the time Harry’s parents attended Hogwarts, or maybe they can push the timeline forward and rewrite the events of Cursed Child—which many die-hard Potter fans don’t consider canon.

What Gameplay Elements Should be Added?

Though Hogwarts Legacy offers players the chance to explore the magical castle of Hogwarts and everything around it, some have complained that the game lacks features. For one, many of the missions are said to be repetitive and can quickly sour the experience over time. Despite being able to fly, the game doesn’t allow anyone to play Quidditch, which would have been essential to the magic school experience.

With the foundations already set for the game, fans expect this sequel to be even bigger, but until WB reveals more details, all fans can do now is wait and see.

In the meantime, Hogwarts Legacy is now playable for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4|5, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
