As Dying Light 2 received a lot of positive reviews, it's inevitable that we'll see a third game in the Dying Light franchise eventually. Developed and published by Techland, Dying Light 2 was released last February 4, 2022 and has stood out from several zombie games we've seen in the past decade. One year since its dropped, fans have started to speculate about what Dying Light 3 could feature.

As an action role-playing survival horror game, Dying Light 2 features a post apocalyptic-themed open world. Set 22 years after Dying Light, the story stars a new protagonist named Aiden Caldwell who has various parkour skills. After The Fall, a new mutant strain of the Harran Virus plunges the world into a period known as the Modern Dark Ages.

Dying Light 3 release date speculation

Quite recently, the lead game designer shared particular features players could be seeing in a third game. Given the success of the first two games, hopefully, once the development kicks off, players will be able to give helpful feedback and suggestions to make Dying Light 3 even better.

Judging from the six-year interval between the first game and the second, we might be seeing the third game around 2028 or 2029. It's a long wait but it'll definitely be worth it.

Right now, there hasn't been any concrete news for development and a release date for Dying Light 3. While it's still early to speculate about a third instalment of the game, what we can do is think of what features players want to see next.

Five things we want to see in Dying Light 3

Since Dying Light 2's release, players have given their feedback and suggestions to better improve the game. We've prepared a list of five things fans want to see in the next game.

More developed story

A major thing that's criticised in Dying Light 2 is its story. Its pacing was inconsistent and some plot lines weren't fully developed. You'll notice how in each chapter of Dying Light 2, you would need to grind quite a bit to progress to the next one.

While its gameplay was decent, an improved story would've made Dying Light 2 a more well rounded game. With that in mind, a third game should ensure the story is one of its best aspects.

Better skills and abilities

Recently, lead game designer, Tymon Smektala had some initial ideas for a third game of Dying Light. In his opinion, the game should be started with a protagonist with better skills and abilities. He mentioned that "when we make Dying Light 3, I want the main character to start with bigger and better skills and abilities. We basically used the same approach [in Dying Light 2] as we did in the first game, where the player starts out pretty weak and then progresses."

Improving the skills and abilities of the game's protagonist seems promising. Though Techland should be careful with this to avoid making the main character overpowered so that players can still get the most out of the gameplay.

Improved weather system

The weather could become game-changing in Dying Light 3. Imagine having rain-making electrical weapons have a spread when used or having snow challenging your movement in-game. It's even possible to use the phases of the moon to affect high tides and low tides in bodies of water and movement around areas.

Improving the weather system in Dying Light could certainly make the playing experience more realistic and can give players a unique challenge in dealing with the apocalypse more practically.

Fewer parkour time trials

Another issue in the game is the number of time trials it had. We would want to see fewer parkour time trials as these make up several side quests in the game. As side quests are supposed to be breathers for the main quest of the game, they shouldn't come off as repetitive or as filler elements for the game.

Increasing horror elements

A final feature that could be added and improved for a third Dying Light game is the effectiveness of the horror elements. The general horror of the game somewhat lacked depth. The dark corners and glowing enemies is quite off-putting and doesn't help create a creepy atmosphere.

Furthermore, the nightime lacks any immediate danger you can feel. You can easily access safe zones and it's quite challenging to trigger a Level 3 or 4 chase. Volatiles are even static and don't really patrol on the roofs like its first game.
