As we gear up for Halloween, how about taking a closer look at the ghostly and spooky side of Pokémon?

Now, Some of you're thinking - Pokemon? Aren't they all cute and cuddly? Well, not exactly! There's a whole bunch of Pokémon that'll make your hair stand on end. There are tons of creatures in the entire Pokémon universe. Some of them are cute and colorful, while others are downright spooky.

With this in mind, take a look at the 10 Spookiest Pokémon ranked on their spooky factor.

10. Yamask

Yamask is one of the saddest yet creepiest ghost-types. It carries around a mask that used to be its human face. Let that sink in for a second! Not only is it a reminder of its past life, but Yamask is said to remember everything from when it was human, and sometimes it even sheds tears whenever it looks at its mask. Imagine a ghost carrying around a piece of its soul that is mourning its lost humanity. That's both spooky and heartbreaking, right?

9. Duskull

Duskull is a kind of little floating ghost Pokémon that always gives off major spooky vibes. As per appearance, it’s literally a skull wrapped in a shadowy cloak and its glowing red eye. What makes it even creepier is that Duskull can pass through walls which means there is no door or barrier that can keep it out. Interestingly, among the Pokémon's fanbase, he is also referred to as a haunted babysitter.

8. Phantump

A cute little tree stump with a smile. But underneath that charm is a sad and spooky story. Phantump is the spirit of a child who got lost in the forest and, well, never found their way back. It possesses a rotting tree stump to move around and is said to lure people deeper into the woods with its ghostly cries. The cute factor definitely takes a backseat when you realize you’re following the call of a child ghost trapped in a forest forever.

7. Cofagrigus

Cofagrigus is often associated with curses and is deeply connected to the lore surrounding tombs and spirits. Also known as the Coffin Pokémon(literally what his name is), he was once a guardian of ancient treasures. If you get too close, it turns you into a mummy.

6. Froslass

Froslass origin is based on the Japanese folklore character yuki-onna, a spirit that lures travelers into snowstorms and leaves them frozen forever. Froslass does exactly that its icy body is said to be filled with the souls of people it’s frozen. Her appearance features a flowing white gown that mostly resembles her snowy Pokémon character and off course a haunting mask-like face too.

5. Darkrai

Darkrai is a Dark-type Pokémon known as the Pitch-Black Pokémon which has a reputation for being mysterious and elusive. If you are familiar with his lore you should know he's not evil but it's definitely one Pokémon you wouldn’t want haunting your dreams. It can manipulate dreams and even cause them to become nightmares. He was widely acclaimed as an eerie villain(but with a twist) in the Pokémon movie - Pokémon: The Rise of Darkrai, released in 2007.

4. Shedinja

Another weirdest and creepiest Pokémon on our list is Shedinja. When Nincada evolves, it leaves behind its old shell which then turns into Shedinja, a hollow ghost bug. But the spooky twist is that Shedinja is said to steal your soul if you look into the hole in its back. Yep, just looking into that empty space could mean your soul gets sucked away. And it doesn’t move much just kind of hovers there silently, waiting for the perfect move.

3. Banette

At first impression, Banette's story has serious horror movie vibes like Chucky Doll, but in Pokémon form. Once a cute stuffed toy that was tossed away and got so mad about it, that it came to life. Now it’s filled with a vengeful spirit and roams around looking for the person who abandoned it. Banette can also evolve into Mega Banette which significantly boosts its horrific appearance.

2. Gengar

Gengar is the classical well-known ghost Pokémon. It loves playing pranks on people by popping out of shadows to give you a scare and then laughing about it. It is a type of ghost that loves to hide in the corner of your room and wait for the perfect moment to make you jump scared. From being mischievous and sneaky to always up to no good yet will definitely make you laugh once you’ve caught your breath.

Lastly, Mimikyu is the poor little ghost Pokémon that just wants to be loved, but it goes about it in the creepiest way possible. It dresses up like Pikachu because Pikachu is super popular, but inside that cute handmade costume lies something unsettling. No one really knows what Mimikyu looks like under there, because it is said that anyone who sees its true form supposedly dies or goes insane. This truly makes it the top contender for the spookiest Pokémon.
