Final Fantasy has introduced numerous characters and out-of-this-world journeys over the past three decades. With its fame and influence, it has become the perfect candidate to be a breeding ground for hilarious memes.
From its frustrating mechanics to its goofy graphics and more, Final Fantasy has a lot of meme-worthy content.
So, have a good chuckle at these eight hilarious inside jokes only real fans will understand.
Yuna-Versity
Yuna and Zack Fair may have never met each other in Final Fantasy, but they have produced one of the best memes.
Coming from Final Fantasy X, Yuna is known for being a summoner and sphere hunter, while Zack comes from Final Fantasy VII and is a soldier.
In their Yuna-versity meme, Zack becomes an infamous jokester when he asks Yuna where the people of Spira learn to summon Aeons.
When Yuna asks Zack where, he answers, “The Yuna-versity.”
But knowing Yuna isn’t easily amused, he may need to try harder to impress her if they ever cross paths.
The Best-Looking Pixelated Guy
There’s no denying that Squall Leonhart is one of the best-looking guys in Final Fantasy. A cadet of the military academy Balamb Garden, he later becomes Final Fantasy VIII's commander and main protagonist.
However, though we have nothing against Squall, we now question Rinoa Heartily’s standards.
In the game, she tells Squall he’s “the best-looking guy here.” But when you zoom in on his image, his face is pixelated every inch, making it distorted.
It’s hard to see how good he looks, but let’s give Final Fantasy VIII some credit. It was released in February 1999, when graphics weren’t as good as they are today.
Angelo Cannon
In Final Fantasy VIII, Rinoa starts the game without power. She’s a regular teenage girl who later becomes a formidable sorceress.
Her limit break, Angel Wing, goes into a Berserk state where the player loses control of her, and she starts hammering enemies with powerful spells.
Before her awakening, her limit breaks feature her dog, Angelo. Her lovable canine helps her in the battle by finding items or making the party invincible for a limited time.
Interestingly, Angelo can also be used to attack enemies by being 'fired' at them. Yes, you read that right— fired, as in making him a huge furry cannonball.
It's probably not a good idea, but it's hilarious.
The Evolution of Reno
Final Fantasy VII is probably the greatest game in the franchise, but not for everyone.
For others, it’s overrated and archaic and is only well-renowned because it was the first game the new generation at the time had experienced.
However, it can’t be denied that it has had a huge impact on Final Fantasy's history.
But considering it was released in the early 2000s, it featured meme-worthy graphics.
Take a look at the first image of Reno back then. His sharp cheekbones can give you papercuts just by looking at them.
But in the recent remake of the game, his looks have dramatically changed, and his attractiveness will instantly make everyone fall in love with him.
Lightning Giving Up on Final Fantasy XIII
Final Fantasy XIII has seen several iterations. In addition to the original game released in December 2009, it spawned two sequels, Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII.
Players know how the original story ended. However, as Square Enix released a couple more FF13-based titles, Lightning Returns being the last entry, it opened itself up for plenty of puns.
The Evil Side of the Tonberries
Tonberries are recurring enemies in Final Fantasy. They were first introduced in Final Fantasy V and have been a mainstay ever since.
But don’t be deceived by their cute and cuddly appearance. Despite their sweet and innocent look, they have an evil side and can instantly kill you.
When these little creatures approach the party, you may think they only want a hug, but be warned.
They will dash forward at the last moment and make a one-shot kill with its sharp knife.
Squall Leonhart’s Motivational One-Liner
Squall is one of the most relatable characters in Final Fantasy. He starts as an introverted and taciturn teenager who distances himself from anyone who tries to befriend him.
This makes him perceived as a stoic and loner, but everything changes as Final Fantasy VIII continues.
However, he still left us with a motivational one-liner, his signature word whenever anyone tries to get close to him.
“Whatever.”
Malboro’s All-Around Status Effect
Another recurring character in Final Fantasy is Malboro.
This creature appears as both an enemy and a summon. It has a large, green, tentacle plan-like appearance, an anemone-like head, and a large mouth lined with sharp teeth.
Scary. But its breath is probably much more horrific. It’s known for its dreaded Bad Breath that can inflict many status effects on its targets, crippling unprotected parties.
It has become one of the franchise's most iconic and challenging enemies.
So, if you ask Marlboro what its favourite Status Effect is, it will answer “everything,” as its Bad Breath alone serves as an all-around Status Effect.
With its over three decades run, Final Fantasy has spawned several memes that make the franchise more entertaining.
So, which ones are your favourite? Let us know in the comments below!
