Super Mario Odyssey 2 - Release date speculation, gameplay, and characters

September 14, 2022: Another Nintendo Direct came and went yesterday without any sort of Super Mario Odyssey 2 news.

Super Mario Odyssey was undoubtedly one of our Italian plumber's finest adventures. First appearing in 2017, Odyssey saw exceptional reviews and it stands as the sixth best-selling game on Nintendo Switch.

While there's been no official confirmation of a sequel to Super Mario Odyssey just yet, Nintendo working on a follow-up entry for their biggest franchise is as certain as death and taxes. It's practically guaranteed.

There's been a couple of rumblings about what Mario's future holds, and here's what we know so far.

When is the Super Mario Odyssey 2 release date?

As mentioned at the top of the page, at the time of writing there's no indication as to when we might see a sequel to Super Mario Odyssey.

It's possible though that we could be in for a long wait, if rumours are to be believed that the studio is now working on a new Donkey Kong game.

Our completely unverified opinion is that we could be waiting until at least 2024 or 2025 before a possible sequel arrives.

Job Listings

Back in October 2019, Nintendo put up job listings for two new Super Mario projects. The first related a Level Designer for a "New 3D Action Game" within Tokyo. That'd likely be for Production Group 8, who previously made Super Mario Odyssey and Super Mario 3D World.

The second specified work for a "New 2D Action Game" level designer, this time based in Kyoto, where previous entries like New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe and Super Mario Maker 2 were made. As Nintendo's only active 2D sub-series - Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze being handled externally by Retro Studios - it's hard to imagine what else this could be.

Now, job listings aren't a huge amount to go off on their own. However, when you consider the imagery used in both ads and Mario's enduring popularity, it'd be very surprising if Nintendo weren't working on new entries.

Is Super Mario Odyssey 2 real?

It's all but guaranteed that Nintendo are working on a new Super Mario platformer, though whether this would a direct sequel to Odyssey is unknown. We've often seen Nintendo release one major entry per console, though the Wii marked a notable exception with Super Mario Galaxy and Galaxy 2.

So, it's not without precedent, and Nintendo President Shuntaro Furakawa previously stated that the Switch is at "the middle of its life cycle". There is the chance that whatever sequel or follow up Odyssey gets will be on the next platform, but the Switch itself isn't really slowing down - we'd very surprised if we didn't get another entry before their next console.
