The Torch Hero, otherwise known as the Human Torch, is a Duelist in Marvel Rivals. Being a damage-dealer fundamentally, Johnny Storm is known as one of the most potent characters in the game. To ensure this, the fiery character relies on heat-based attacks, mobility, and the ability to stay airborne for a prolonged period.
With that said, every character in the Marvel Rivals roster has some weaknesses that can be capitalized upon—the Torch Hero is no different. In the article below, we’ll explain how to do just that. Read on to learn more.
Countering the Torch Hero
The Torch Hero is a Duelist in Marvel Rivals. This means that most of his abilities focus on the offensive side of things, allowing him to deal a high DPS. Being considered one of the most potent characters in the game, Johnny’s go-to offensive tactic is using heat-based attacks. In that case, it’s vital to study the character before going on to counter him.
For starters, the Human Torch is a mobile character. This means that he can efficiently maneuver various locations on the map. Additionally, his damage-dealing abilities are mid-to-long ranged, allowing him to maintain a distance while wounding his enemies. Lastly, he can also stay airborne.
To make matters worse on the mobility side of things, the Human Torch can rely on the Plasma Body. This is an ability that allows Johnny to fly faster, making it all the more difficult to precisely damage him. With Flaming Meteor, he can complement this ability by coming down rapidly like a blazing ball of fire to inflict heavy damage on his enemies.
How to Counter the Torch Hero
Through the abilities mentioned above, it’s clear that countering Johnny will not be an easy task. That being said, the character still has some weaknesses which, if properly exploited, can prove to be fatal for the Human Torch.
When aiming to counteract Johnny, characters who can disrupt his movement, withstand his burn damage, and capitalize on his moments of vulnerability are the go-to. For this purpose, we’ll be discussing a few heroes in the listicle below.
Storm (Duelist)
Storm, otherwise known as Susan Storm is depicted as Human Torch’s sister in the movies and comics. That being said, she serves as a potent counter against her brother in Marvel Rivals, particularly because of her control over wind and lightning.
Starting with the fundamentals, she has similar abilities to her brother Johnny, where she’s able to inflict significant damage to the enemy from a distance while being able to stay airborne. Through her ability to summon gusts of wind at will, she directly counters the Torch Hero’s movement mechanics, making it difficult for him to maneuver across the map.
Since she’s a duelist, she can also ensure dealing a large amount of damage to the Human Torch. She ensures this through her Primary (Wind Blade) and Secondary (Bolt Rush) fire. Additionally, she can also use her Weather Control abilities to further enhance her and her allies’ attributes.
Magneto (Vanguard)
Since Magneto is fundamentally a Vanguard, his high health pool compared to Johnny already provides him a competitive advantage. That being said, there are other attributes to the character that make him an obvious counter to the Torch Hero in Marvel Rivals.
Starting with his general abilities, he’s able to manipulate and significantly influence the battlefield through his metal-based attacks. While being defense-oriented, he ensures high damage output to his enemies—that too, from a distance.
For instance, in his Primary Fire, the Iron Volley, where the character can burst out explosive projectiles to his enemies. He can also utilize his Ultimate, the Meteor M, where Magneto essentially flies into the air, to unleash a ball of high-damage meteor to the ground, disrupting and inflicting critical damage to Johnny and his teammates.
In cases where the Human Torch is somehow able to counter Magneto’s offensive strategies, the latter can simply revert to Iron Bulwark, an ability that allows Magneto to form a defensive wall around himself, negating incoming damage and providing defensive support to the character.
Loki (Strategist)
Although Loki is essentially a Strategist and his role revolves around providing support for his teammates, he’s considered to be a wildcard counter against the Torch Hero. Due to his deceptive and illusion-based abilities, Loki can confuse his enemies and create enough gaps for him and his teammates to capitalize on the opportunity.
On the offensive side of things, Loki is decent. Through abilities like the Mystical Missile, he can essentially shoot explosive missiles that deal damage to his enemies—Johnny Storm in this case. A unique advantage here is that these missiles can also heal Loki’s allies. Through God of Mischief, he’s able to replicate a whole character. Even their abilities. These can—again, be used to inflict heavy damage to the Human Torch.
With his deceptive abilities, he can effectively counter Johnny’s reliance on heat-based attacks to wound his enemies. This is done by creating illusions of himself that can confuse the latter. In cases where the Torch Hero does get the ‘jump’ on Loki, he can simply revert to Deception, where the character essentially becomes invisible.
