WB Games is currently at an all-time low with the failure of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and the cancellation of the Wonder Woman game.
Nevertheless, there is still hope for the future, and DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran have said they would be open to a DC counterpart of a recent hit live service game.
Marvel Rivals for DC
The DC Studios co-heads had recently held a press conference (via Brandon Davis) updating journalists about their plans for the franchise. Though Davis didn’t go into much detail, he confirmed that Gunn and Safran were open to having a DC equivalent of the game Marvel Rivals.
While no such project is in the works (that we know of), the pair are said to be in talks with several game developers, deciding on the future of DC in games. One confirmed collaboration is with Epic Games’ Fortnite, and it looks like the game will be releasing a playable Superman based on the upcoming James Gunn film.
What would a DC-based Overwatch Look Like?
For now, Marvel Rivals is currently rivaling the OG hero shooter Overwatch. With the comparisons for both games already neck-and-neck, it’s puzzling how DC would set itself apart—besides having DC characters like Superman and Batman being playable.
If anything, Marvel Rivals closely follows Overwatch, from the free-to-play business model to the Gooner aesthetic for many characters. While it’s easy enough to copy the game format, maybe WB Games can change the DC version to be less about paying for cosmetics and just embrace the loot box mechanic like the original Overwatch.
They could also embrace the more ‘realistic’ look of the Injustice games, but it seems that stylized comic/anime looks are the current trend, and they are much easier to create cosmetics for.
DC has Never been Short of Games
Though Marvel may be riding high now with Rivals, many fans remember a time when DC thrived in the gaming space. Besides the highly successful Arkham games, there were also the Injustice fighting games from NetherRealm Studios. DC characters were also playable for the now-cancelled MultiVersus game before Marvel Rivals.
Admittedly, later DC titles haven’t been generating that much positive buzz. Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad were poorly received when they launched, and there’s no news on a new Injustice game.
There have been rumors that Rocksteady would be returning to make a Batman Beyond game, but even now, some are skeptical about how that would differ from the usual Arkham titles—which the failed Gotham Knights shared their DNA with.
No official plans have been announced for a DC-Overwatch, but fans can play Marvel Rivals, now available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
