The Overwatch comparisons just keep on coming. Overwatch usually celebrates the winter season with some unique cosmetics and game modes, and Marvel Rivals just revealed their Winter Celebration, which kicks off on December 20.
The event promises new winter-focused cosmetics and a unique game mode that focuses on Jeff the Land Shark (and it’s not anything like Mei’s Snowball Offensive).
Marvel Rivals Winter Celebration
The Winter Celebration announces Jeff’s Winter Splash Festival, a new game mode that will have each player taking on Jeff and try splashing the others to claim territory.
The official description reads:
“The holiday season is about to get even more magical!
“Enjoy the Winter Celebration with special holiday-themed costumes, new game modes, and a few surprises!
“Ready to Shine? We're bringing in 'Jeff's Winter Splash Festival'—a new game mode—so you can truly exude your land shark joy and take on new territories. A special winter greeting card with gifts from Jeff is also waiting for you…”
Winter Splash will be a 4v4 game mode. Progressing will earn players limited-time skins, such as Jeff’s Cuddle Fuzzlefin costume (from the Gwenpool comics). This costume comes with a nameplate, spray, and other cosmetic goods.
Jeff isn’t the only one getting the spotlight this season, either. There are also special winter looks for Venom, Rocket Racoon, and Magik. They even found a way to make Groot a walking Christmas tree, complete with Guardians of the Galaxy ornaments and a Rocket toy where his heart should be.
Future Events for Marvel Rivals
With the game just launching this month, a lot of fans weren’t expecting there to be a winter event already, but since Marvel Rivals runs on the amount of skins getting sold at the shop, it would make sense for NetEase to make as many cosmetics as they can to sell for the game.
Looking at Overwatch’s pattern, it’s possible that Marvel Rivals could be gearing up for Chinese New Year/Valentine’s Events, Summer Events, and Halloween events. Overwatch also has this backstory event called Archives, and they also make sure to have an event that celebrates the anniversary of the game's official launch.
So far, nothing official has been revealed, but if Marvel Rivals is already geared up for the chance at winter-exclusive goods, you can bet they already have the rest of the year planned out with different game modes and season-specific skins for each hero.
So Far So Good
Marvel Rivals hasn’t been out for a month yet, but the game has been getting praise. Of course, it’s a tad unbalanced with the hero kits, but many fans think that adds to the fun.
They’ll likely update it once an official competitive mode is introduced, but for now, everyone is just having fun blasting away as their favorite Marvel hero.
Marvel Rivals’ Winter Celebration event starts on December 19, 2024, at 11 PM PST. The game is now available for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5.
