Sonic the Hedgehog 3 may have dominated the box office last Christmas, but this April, WB Pictures will release another video game adaptation: A Minecraft Movie, directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre).
The movie will be released in a few months, and a new preview has been released, giving fans more of the Overworld and its inhabitants. While Jack Black and Jason Momoa have been at the center of all the marketing, this trailer does reveal the presence of one more extra cast member.
Jennifer Coolidge is in the Minecraft Movie
The latest preview for A Minecraft Movie revealed that Jennifer Coolidge is part of the cast.
While no description has been revealed as to who Coolidge is playing, her short scene does give something away in the trailer. Fans were expecting the whole movie to take place in the Overworld, but based on Coolidge’s scene, it’s been confirmed that a villager has managed to find their way into the real world, so there could be some kind of Pixels storyline that’s going to be happening as well.
This is just speculation, but it’s possible that Coolidge could be playing the mother of one of the main characters. While it would be predictable for her to be the mom of the lead, Henry (Sebastian Hansen), she could also be the mom of the other lost human, Natalie (Emma Myers).
Seeing that the director Hess likes to have movies with man-children, it wouldn’t be surprising that she would be playing Jason Momoa’s mom.
Other Cast Members Yet to be Revealed
Although Coolidge appears in the latest trailer, some high-profile cast members have yet to be spotted in the film. Kate McKinnon (Saturday Night Live) and Jemaine Clement (Moana, Flight of the Conchords) have been confirmed to be in the movie.
This is just more speculation, but if Steve were going to be a character in the movie, Kate McKinnon could play Alex, Steve’s girlfriend, in the game and another default player skin.
TLOU Season 2 v Minecraft
With The Last of Us Season 2 expected to dominate online discussion in April, Minecraft has the unique role of bringing some levity to the Spring box office.
Here’s the official description for the movie:
“Welcome to the world of Minecraft, where creativity doesn’t just help you craft, it’s essential to one’s survival! Four misfits—Garrett ‘The Garbage Man’ Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Hansen), Natalie (Myers) and Dawn (Danielle Brooks)—find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination.
“To get back home, they’ll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve (Black). Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative…the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.”
Catch A Minecraft Movie when it comes to cinemas on April 4.
