Apex Legends developers have decided to completely overhaul the Broken Moon map as part of the Season 21 update.

Broken Moon made its Apex Legends debut in Season 15 and for Season 21, Respawn Entertainment has decided it's time for change with significant overhauls to various points of interest (POI) including the often-divisive Promenade, an area of the map many have wanted destroyed altogether.

Coinciding with the arrival of Alter, Broken Moon is now packed full of new areas to explore along with changes based on feedback from players that have finally got their way with the destruction of Promenade.

During a Season 21 media briefing, lead level designer Steve Young revealed how Respawn went about bringing huge changes to the map:

"One of the biggest changes is the new central POI known as Quarantine Zone. The combat is much more predictable because the paths and buildings are much more defined. There are still opportunities for players to discover innovative ways to move in and around the playspace."

Young goes on to reveal that Broken Moon now features a total of 20 POIs resulting in even more loot to obtain during the early stages of a match. The addition of smaller POIs within the "connective tissue" of Broken Moon has enabled Respawn to make the map feel less flat to inject a breath of fresh air.

Map design often makes or breaks a game and for Apex Legends, overhauls provide players with a refreshed layout and aesthetic that's bound to keep them ticking over until a brand-new battlefield makes its way to the battle royale.

"Our goal from the beginning was breathing new life into the central POI," adds Young. "It [Broken Moon] feels a lot more like an alien world and does a really good job of setting itself apart from the rest of the maps."

With an overhauled Broken Moon back in the rotation, we'll have to wait and hear from players for their final verdict. It's clear Respawn has spent plenty of time adjusting various areas of the map and with Promenade now gone, the map could well become a fan-favorite.
