Breakdown

  • Assassin's Creed Shadows has a very cool open-world feature that could change things for the genre
  • The game's various seasons affect whatever areas you're in, which is incredibly vital for stealth sections
  • Ponds that are normal in the summer can be frozen in the winter, so players will have to keep these in mind when playing stealthfully

Assassin’s Creed Shadows might be another Ubisoft-developed open-world title, but this stealthy adventure offers a unique seasonal feature that is rarely seen in games. While Ubisoft does get called for having repetitive open-worlds, the company is finding ways to innovate again with the release of Shadows.

IGN gave an extensive report on the game’s unique features, including unique seasonal gameplay that will have stealth players observe the environment. Shadows will cycle through spring, summer, autumn and winter, with each season changing the area and making players think carefully about their next action.

Ubisoft provided very interesting examples that could change the way players make their way through the world of Assassin’s Creed Shadows. During the summer, players will be able to go under ponds and wait for the perfect opportunity to strike their opponent. However, during the winter, this same pond will be frozen, forcing players to find a different route.

This is all in addition to the Splinter Cell-like mechanics added to the game’s stealth sections, as players can dim lights to surprise their foes. All in all, these are much-needed changes that should please fans who like the older games’ focus on stealth and those who prefer the RPG mechanics.

Now that Assassin’s Creed Shadows is following the Syndicate playbook of giving players two protagonists, it will be interesting to see which routes become more popular. Whether you’re slashing through foes as the fearsome samurai Yasuke or stealthing it up as Naoe, there’s a lot here for fans to appreciate.

Players are really excited to see Shadows focus more on stealth, despite regular combat still having a presence in the game. It is annoying that this promising title features all of the usual Ubisoft trappings, but that’s the current gaming climate for everyone.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be coming to PS5, Xbox Series, and PC on November 15. Those interested in the previous entry can pick up Assassin’s Creed Mirage, which was a pleasant callback to the older games.
