Breakdown

  • The trailer for Insomniac's canceled Spider-Man online game has leaked
  • It would have featured five Spider-Men or Spider-Women teaming up to explore New York and fight the Sinister Six
  • Previous reports said this spin-off was canceled a long time ago

Fans have discovered a leaked trailer for the canceled Marvel’s Spider-Man online game, which would have been called Marvel’s Spider-Man: The Great Web. This trailer was part of the huge Insomniac Games leak, showing that some work in this project was done before it got canned.

Salvaged by gamers on the Gaming Leaks and Rumours subreddit, this trailer would have had multiple Spider-Men and Spider-Women teaming up to save New York. We see up to five of the Spider-People in action, including recent fan favorites like Spider-Gwen and Spider-Man 2099 from the Spider-Verse films. The trailer is even narrated by Spider-Man VA Yuri Lowenthal, so it’s a shame that this project didn’t get the green light.

Based on the leaked trailer, this Marvel’s Spider-Man spin-off would let players swing around New York and parts of the multiverse, as they try to stop crime together. This ranges from basic mooks trying to rob stores to actual bosses like Venom, Vulture, and even Doctor Octopus.

Like the recent Suicide Squad game, this spin-off would have a multiverse story where a version of the Sinister Six is wreaking havoc anywhere. Naturally, it’s up to Spider-Man and the rest of his Spider-Verse friends to stop them. Unfortunately, characters like Gwen Stacy and Ben Reilly weren’t voiced, showing how early this project was in production.

There are still hints of a grand multiverse in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, though we aren’t sure if they would have directly led to this multiplayer game. Both Peter and Miles can find various Spider-Bots that belong to other Spider-Men and Spider-Women in the multiverse. Peter also encounters a Spider-Verse portal in the game’s post-credits scene, though that’s more tied with the film than this online game.

With many fans waiting for DLC to hit Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, it will be interesting to see if any of these ideas will survive as a short campaign. As it stands, this is just a very good idea that Sony or Marvel didn’t approve of, which is a shame. At the least, this trailer gives us a “What If?” to think about.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is available on PS5, with fans hopeful for a PC port.
