Very rarely do you see canceled games come back from the dead, but former Xbox exclusive Captain Blood is proof that it can happen. When we say a former Xbox exclusive, we don’t mean Xbox Series X but the Xbox 360 from the early 2010’s, showing just how weird this revival is.
Originally revealed 13 years ago, this pirate-themed hack-and-slash title is finally making its way to modern consoles this Fall (via Pure Xbox). Since this was originally developed for the Xbox 360, it won’t surprise anyone that this game is coming out on pretty much every system, including the Nintendo Switch.
Captain Blood definitely looks like a product of its time, with the gameplay giving us big God of War-vibes, albeit, with more comedy. The fact that this is a more linear adventure with major combat encounters does make us nostalgic for these combat-oriented titles. Maybe it’s a good thing publisher SNEG decided to save this game.
While there are ship battles similar to Assassin’s Creed 4 or Skull and Bones, it’s clear the meat of this game is hack-and-slash combat. It will be interesting to see if this does hold up on both fronts, since ship battles are a major part of pirate games these days.
Since most AAA games are massive RPGs, open-world titles, or multiplayer-focused FPS games, Captain Blood might stand out in a good way. Despite being a big hit back in the day, spectacle fighters like the original God of War and Bayonetta are pretty rare these days. We aren’t saying this game will revive the genre, but it is more interesting because than expected.
After years of fans not even thinking about this game, it seems that Captain Blood was able to find a new lease in life. This pirate-themed action game is coming out in the Fall and will be released on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
