The underrated PlayStation exclusive Days Gone won't be getting a sequel. Since its release in 2019, fans of the biker-themed zombie game have clamored for a follow-up, but Sony will never greenlight one.
Days Gone director Jeff Ross urged fans to give up hope for a sequel just before Sony’s recent State of Play showcase. He told fans to never expect news of a sequel to the open-world zombie game.
In a tweet to fans, Ross explained that PlayStation isn't interested in continuing Days Gone as an IP. He showed a PlayStation poster filled with mascots, notably missing the Days Gone protagonist, Deacon.
“A lot of people still ask me if there will ever be a Days Gone sequel, so I submit this poster as evidence it will never happen,” Ross told fans. “Sony higher-ups like Hermen were never fans, so you won't hear about it at the PlayStation State of Play today or ever.”
Ross theorized that PlayStation saw Days Gone as a less successful zombie game compared to The Last of Us. With Naughty Dog’s franchise already filling the zombie game genre, there was no chance to continue the series.
“I think his [Hermen’s] bias was purely portfolio-based,” Ross said. “Meaning they already had a zombie game, so why would they need the lesser-performing title?”
In the past, PlayStation treated Days Gone with a degree of prestige. Alongside a huge showcase at E3, the game received a PC port and even a PS5 upgrade, something more prestigious games like Bloodborne still haven’t been granted.
However, Days Gone was not the biggest release for PlayStation. Amidst titles like Uncharted, God of War, and Marvel’s Spider-Man, the zombie game was only a mild success. Still, it would be nice to see the game receive a sequel sometime in the future.
At the time of writing, Days Gone developer Bend Studio is working on a new IP that uses the zombie game’s open-world tech for PS5. Nothing is known about the upcoming game, but hopefully, it will be a huge new exclusive for PlayStation 5 gamers.
