Breakdown

  • Dr Disrespect blames Call of Duty: Warzone's poor level design on the use of AI.
  • He believes human-designed maps in games like H1Z1 and PUBG are better.
  • Dr Disrespect's upcoming game, Deadrop, will reportedly avoid AI in its development process.

Popular streamer Dr Disrespect has caused a stir within the Warzone community by blaming artificial intelligence (AI) for the supposedly "terrible flow" plaguing Warzone's battle royale experience.

The controversy stems from a recent Treyarch job posting for an animator role that listed "polishing 2D art made by humans and generative AI tools" as part of the responsibilities. This sparked discussion among players, with Dr Disrespect emerging as one of the most vocal critics.

Dr Disrespect, a streamer with a background in game design having worked as a level designer on Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare maps, has long been a thorn in the side of Warzone's level design. Awkward building structures that disrupt the flow of combat have been a particular target of his criticism.

In light of the Treyarch job posting, Dr Disrespect wasted no time in connecting the dots, suggesting that AI-generated level design was the culprit behind Warzone's shortcomings. "All these awkwardly designed structures in Warzone that have terrible flow are like I've been saying for years, AI-generated," he blasted on his social media.

Dr Disrespect's confidence in his claims was bolstered by his past experience. When questioned about his assertion and if he could achieve better results, Disrespect didn't hold back. "Way better," he declared, referencing the success of titles like H1Z1, PUBG, and earlier Call of Duty iterations like Blackout and Verdansk Warzone – all, according to him, products of human originality rather than AI assistance.

This stance aligns with the development of his own game, Deadrop, which is currently under development by his studio Midnight Society. Given his scathing remarks towards AI in Call of Duty, it's safe to say Deadrop's design will be firmly rooted in human creativity.

This isn't Dr Disrespect's first rodeo when it comes to calling out Call of Duty. Last year, he sided with fellow streamer NICKMERCS when the studio removed his custom Warzone skin. More recently, in March, he accused the game of "giving up on itself" after his squad was dismantled by a suspected hacker.

Dr Disrespect's latest critique adds another layer to his ongoing feud with Call of Duty, and with the weight of his experience and upcoming game behind his words, the debate over AI's role in game design is sure to rage on.
