- Dr. Robotnik's Ring Racers is another Sonic fan game that looks great
- The racer takes inspiration from special stages in Sonic games
- Fans can play it now for free
Sonic fan games continue to be made at a surprisingly quick rate, with Dr. Robotnik’s Ring Racers being the latest title to try its hand at racing. While there’s no shortage of fan-made or official Sonic racing games, there’s a lot to like about what we’ve seen in Ring Racers.
Developed by Kart Krew, this game looks like a forgotten racing game from the Genesis and Saturn era, with gorgeous visuals that pay homage to those time periods. The commercial released on Twitter is also pretty good, truly capturing that attitude SEGA had back in the ‘90s.
If the developers of Dr. Robotnik’s Ring Racers seems familiar, it’s because they also worked on SRB2Kart, another well-known Sonic racing game made by fans. Rings Racers looks like a huge improvement to that game, with more creative course design and some funky music to listen to.
What makes Ring Racers stand out is that it looks like a racer based on some of the Sonic special stages. It’s a concept that makes plenty of sense and we’re surprised to see fans come up with it first instead of SEGA or Sonic Team.
SEGA does what Nintendon’t when it comes to fan games, as the company has allowed a ton of fan-made Sonic games to exist. The company even hired fans to work on their games, with Sonic Mania being a huge success because of it. While they briefly worked on Sonic Origins, the team behind Sonic Mania have since worked on Penny's Big Breakaway, a great 3D platformer.
Like a lot of the best Sonic fan games, Dr. Robotnik’s Ring Racers is a free download and won’t require any payments whatsoever. This means fans can try it out for themselves, assuming they have a PC that can run most games. At the time of writing, this racer runs on Apple and Windows, so Linux users are missing out, though a port is coming soon.
