Breakdown

  • From Software has confirmed it’s only making one expansion for Elden Ring
  • Shadows of the Erdtree will be the last DLC for the Souls-like
  • An Elden Ring 2 is still on the table

Dark Souls juggernaut From Software has confirmed that there will only be one Elden Ring DLC expansion.

The upcoming Shadow of the Erdtree expansion is an absolutely massive addition to the open-world RPG. But those wishing for even more adventures in the brutal fantasy world will be disappointed.

In an interview with Chinese website Zhihu, via VGC, From Software head Hidetaka Miyazaki confirmed there is only one post-release expansion coming for Elden Ring players. After that, fans will have to wait until a possible sequel.

Miyazaki explained that the team wanted to release one massive expansion to the game instead of releasing multiple smaller Elden Ring DLCs. This is why Shadow of the Erdtree has taken so long, and why it’ll be the last content we see for the game.

On the other hand, there is hope for an Elden Ring 2 in the future. Following the release of Armored Core 6, FromSoftware currently has no confirmed titles in the works. While fans have begged for a Bloodborne 2 or even a Dark Souls 4, it’s unknown what the studio is developing after the release of Elden Ring’s finale.

In the past, we’ve seen massive re-releases of FromSoftware games with additional content. For example, Dark Souls 2: Scholars of the First Sin saw a full re-release and even remaster alongside its DLC expansion.

Due to its massive sales figures, an Elden Ring follow-up is certainly expected. However, we could see follow-ups to games such as Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, or even a King’s Field reboot. Now that would be a blast from the past.

Releasing on June 21, 2024, Shadow of the Erdtree introduces new locations, weapons, abilities and enemies to the hard-as-nails action adventure game. For those who buy the game’s pricy collector’s edition, there’s even 18 inches of Messmer the Impaler to store on your shelves.
