Square Enix has weirdly pushed an update to Final Fantasy 7 Remake that changes the final line of the game. While some fans have been upset at so-called censorship, this change actually alters the remake for the worse.
Spoilers ahead for the 2020 game, after the crew escape from Midgar, Aerith looks up at the natural sky surrounding them and says: “I miss it. The steel sky.”
In the new Final Fantasy 7 Remake update, Aerith’s dialogue removes the mention of Midgar’s steel sky. Instead, she simply says: “This sky… I don’t like it.”
The new line has allegedly been changed to be closer to the original Japanese dialogue, but many fans of the remake feel that the altered line is much worse than it was on release. However, the localisation of the English release added a lot more flair to the scene that made you almost nostalgic for the place you just escaped.
Fans of the remake have almost universally turned against the change in dialogue, although some don’t mind the move to a more faithful translation. On the other hand, the new line is a direct callback to Final Fantasy 7: Crisis Core, which fans of the series should remember. This scene also returns in FF7 Rebirth.
The Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy is set to end around 2028 with the second entry, Rebirth, releasing later this month. In our review of the game, we described it as one of the true greats of the RPG genre.
“Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will take you on a rollercoaster of emotions as it retells its unforgettable story in brand-new ways,” our review reads. “Square Enix has done an amazing job retooling the game from one millennium to another, making yet another bombastic RPG that die-hard fans and newcomers alike will undoubtedly fall in love with.”
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth releases exclusively on PS5, for a small period, on February 29, 2024.
