If you’ve ever wanted to explore Liberty City, Vice City and San Andreas in the palm of your hand, you already can. However, the controversial GTA Trilogy versions of Rockstar’s iconic PlayStation 2 Grand Theft Auto titles are now coming to mobile.
Part of the Netflix Gaming catalogue, GTA Trilogy will bring the recent remasters of Rockstar’s industry-changing video games to Android and iOS. Not only will the games feature the same graphical overhaul as the PC and console versions, but they’ll also feature brand new touch controls for mobile gamers.
GTA Trilogy on Android and iOS releases December 14th. The game will be downloadable as a separate download, but players will need to login to their Netflix accounts in order to play. Unfortunately, there is no standalone release for the titles outside of the Netflix versions, although the also-controversial older mobile ports of the games are still available on the Google Play Store and App Store.
The Netflix Gaming additions on Android and iOS have been great for mobile gamers. Killer titles such as Dead Cells, Into the Breach, TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge and more have been released through the service. Even the award-winning FMV game Immortality was released via the subscription.
While many have been upset at the fact that Netflix’s mobile games are locked behind a subscription, the quality of mobile ports releasing in the service are sublime. With new games planned for 2024 including Katana Zero, Death’s Door, and Hades, Netflix’s mobile offerings are only getting better over time.
The GTA Trilogy has been largely criticised for its poor performance on launch, awful graphical changes (such as the lack of draw distance fog), removed songs from the originals and AI-upscaled textures that garbled up text and ruined numerous jokes and gags.
While the release has since received multiple updates to remedy issues, it’s still been blasted by fans of the originals. Nevertheless, the games’ arrival on mobile is still a nice addition, especially as a free inclusion in your Netflix subscription.
