Helldivers 2 has a lot of insidious lore for those who pay attention, but anyone wanting a Story Mode dedicated to it is going to be disappointed. The devs at Arrowhead have stated that they won’t be working on a new mode dedicated to its story, since it’s focused on multiplayer thrills.
Shams Jorjani, the new CEO of Arrowhead, responded to a fan asking about a potential Story mode, saying “sorry bro” and then saying why. Jorjani says that developing a whole mode dedicated to the game’s lore would be like making a brand-new game, hence the continued focus on multiplayer shooting.
While a Story Mode would be great for Helldivers 2, especially for those who prefer single-player games, many would argue that the game doesn’t need it. Fans are already enjoying how obviously evil the corporations they’re working for are, so making the clear subtext actual text might lessen that enjoyment.
There are definitely a small group of fans who want a single-player mode for this game, but they are trumped by everyone else enjoying it as a multiplayer shooter. Helldivers 2 is easily the biggest surprise of 2024, already selling millions of copies after the game was simultaneously launched on PS5 and PC. It’s a shame that Sony decided to take this game away from over 170 countries, but everyone else is having a good time.
Many view this game as a live-service done right, with regular updates coming out to add more content and remove bugs. While there are microtransactions, they don’t affect gameplay and the devs have been outspoken about not wanting this game to take more of your money. It’s a lesson that more of these publishers should take to heart, but only time will tell if that actually happens.
Helldivers 2 is readily available on PlayStation 5 and PC. Curious fans can also pick up the first game, which is a twin-stick shooter that has a single-player story mode.
