The Nintendo Switch 2 might be a more powerful machine than fans had anticipated. According to leaks, the dock will come equipped with a Realtek RTD2175N-CG chipset, which could be capable of outputting 4k resolution in 60hz displays.
The rumor comes from Famiboards, a very popular Nintendo-centric forum. A user shared the name of the chip used in the Nintendo Switch 2, stating that, while they couldn't find official specs, it could be the successor of the RTD2173, which can already output in 4K.
The chip can go as far as outputting 8k, however, it would need to come with Display Stream Compression(DSC), a technology that essentially compresses video data so the output can reach higher resolutions. Doesn't sound like Nintendo would go this far, but the capabilities are there.
Of course, take all of this with a grain of salt. Having said that, recent rumors do suggest the Switch 2 is a massive upgrade on the current iteration of the device.
The biggest indication is the fact that a previous leak stated that the next mainline Pokémon game, Gen 10, would be a Switch 2 exclusive. Now, Nintendo wouldn't want to lock out the Switch's huge install base from buying a new Pokémon game, with over 150 million units sold, if there wasn't a good reason behind the decision. A historical technological leap for the series would be exactly that.
For comparison's sake, the original Nintendo Switch only reached a 1080p output display when docked. More demanding games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild only hit 900p and 30fps while docked.
Even if you're not enthusiastic about the Switch 2's capabilities on a larger display, this significant technological advancement could result in much improved handheld display quality, easily exceeding 720p this time. It was a given, of course, but if Nintendo manages to make the portable screen to hit at least 1080p, that would make everyone extremely happy.
It will all be revealed soon when the perhaps the most anticipated Nintendo Direct of all time goes live this April 2 at 6 AM PDT/9 AM ET.
