Breakdown
- A leaked video shows a Fall Guys-style Sonic game in action
- The game appears to be made for mobile devices
- Expect an announcement soon
The next Sonic game has been leaked and it’s a platformer battle royale, similar to Epic Games’ highly successful Fall Guys called Sonic Toys Party. It’s a direction many didn’t see coming but the gameplay looks like it will have the SEGA mascot’s signature speed-based gameplay in mind.
Fans on the Gaming Leaks and Rumours subreddit posted the leaked game’s trailer, showing Sonic and a number of his friends in multiplayer platformer action. Despite the obvious Fall Guys inspiration, some signature Sonic elements like dash panels and springs give it a proper identity.
Based on the UI, it seems like Sonic Toys Party is going to be a mobile game with various in-game currencies. It will be interesting to see if this is an Apple Arcade exclusive like Sonic Dream Team or if the game is coming to other systems. We wouldn’t be surprised if the game is temporarily exclusive to Apple, given the number of deals SEGA and Apple have made.
Although the hype has died down somewhat, Fall Guys is still a popular multiplayer game and it already has a number of clones roaming around. This isn’t even the first time a popular IP has given this format a shot since Nintendo gave it a shot with Kirby’s Dream Buffet. It will be fun to see how the Sonic version works out and we’re sure an announcement will be coming soon.
Sonic games continue to be a mixed bag, with both Sonic Frontiers and Sonic Superstars having their fair share of fans and critics. Both games do look and control well, though they also suffer from various gameplay issues that hamper their own experiences. With all that being said, there’s still a lot of eyes on the Sonic brand, thanks to the Sonic 3 movie and Sonic x Shadow Generations.
No release date for Sonic Toys Party has been released, though this leak does imply that an announcement will be made soon.
